The "trainer" tires are made of a different rubber compound, one that wears
a lot better under the higher temps that a trainer creates. It's not a
compound you'd want to ride on the road though, so they're often a different
color (bright orange, for the Continentals).
You can use any cheapie tire on a trainer though. The main point is to not
use a high-quality tire, because you're going to burn through it rather
quickly, and why burn through an expensive tire when a cheap one will
probably last longer (and save a lot of $$$)?
