I installed a Cateye Astrale 8 with hardwired cadence and rear speed sensors, but my prior computer was a cheapie no cadence front wheel unit. If the flightdeck has cadence I probably wouldn't bother changing, I look at HR and cadence much more than speed on the trainer anyway. For $50 Cdn another option would be to install an Astrale 8 just for the "trainer season" and remove it if you didn't want clutter on the bike later - install was easy and nothing is permanent.

my flight deck has cadence and that is what i want but it gets its data from the front tire? trainer spins on back tire. thanks for the help thou

How can it get cadence from the front tire? It must calculate it by knowing the gear, otherwise there'd have to be a sensor on the crank/pedals. Don't see any easy way around this, except perhaps lengthening the wire and moving the front sensor to the back.

I think he means the speed sensor/magnet. I've used the Cateye Astrale 8 with the cadence and rear speed also. This year I upgraded to get the Cateye Double wireless computer - one speed/cadence unit and no wires.

I think the Flight deck knows what gear your in via sensor from a flightdeck compatible shifter (ultegra - dura ace). You then enter your cogset and the cycle computer calculates cadence based on speed. at least I think thats how it works!

I've recently got a Cateye CD300 double cordless and so far it works great, out on the road and on the trainer.

The sender unit sits on the left hand chain stay and is a bit on the bulky/ugly side but doesn't cause any problems. I had to adjust the wheel speed sensor arm as I had it at 1mm clearance and when leaning on the left hand side of the bike on the road the magnet was hitting the sensor. But at 5mm it clears easily and works perfectly. (I have a Roubaix c/w carbon frame, so the chain stays are quite curvy and close to the wheel at the seat tube end - but it still all fits OK).

As it works on the back wheel and pedal cranks, you get all the same info on the trainer as on the road. Cost £95 GBP.

Thats right that is were it gets the info i have ultegra shifters.

😕 Why cant you just put the flight deck pick up on the rear wheel ?

The wiring on the flight deck isn't long enough. I ordered a cateye yesterday that reads from the rear wheel just going to use it during trainer season. only cost 30 bucks. thanks for the help though
