Last week I was traveling on a Virgin Voyager train. These trains have hooks to hang the bike from.
Unfortunately the train was full so I sat down on the floor near my bike. I had hung it up by the front wheel. I noticed that when the train is moving the bike was swinging significantly. This worried me a bit, possibly unjustifiably, so I stood next to the bike damping the swing.
Could the swinging damage the headset, its not meant to be loaded, in that direction?
Next time I come across this system I will hook the heavy (Rholoff) back wheel which I assume would reduce the load on the headset, and the swinging.

Another incident on the same journey. I changed train in Bristol. I got on a local type train with the three flip up seats for the bike storage area. As ever these seats were occupied. So I asked "Ladies please move its the only place to put the bike and there are plenty of free seats in the carriage". Very kindly these two young ladies got up and found seats elsewhere. Then another passenger said to me "You're a cheeky sod telling somebody to move just to get a place to put your bike."

But - provided there aren't any restrictions in place as to *when* you can take your bike on the train - that's where bikes are supposed to go in carriages of that general design, so as not to obstruct/inconvenience other passengers. So I wouldn't feel guilty about asking people to budge; I'm sure the guard/conductor would've thought you did the right thing.

I presume it is also the wheelchair space. So you could ask them if they thought it cheeky to ask someone to move so you could put a wheelchair there. Or if you'd ask someone to move off the luggage rack so you could put your cases there.
