I somehow doubt that they intentionally mislead people - it was a good offer
and they must have underestimated the level of interest. At least you'll be
getting a shelter as soon as they can supply one - and if they have to get
some more made they'll probably be making a loss on the deal as well..

If they honour it you're lucky. I was similarly duped by Running and Fitness
with a heart rate monitor. They said they'd run out and sent me some socks
instead. The socks blew up on my first outing. I cancelled the DD forthwith.
Conning folk like that only serves to alienate them. I'll never buy a copy
again on principle. Hope they're reading but probably not.

Assuming getting more costs the same per unit they must be laughing, surely
- unless it's a loss leader (which would be silly for a magazine, surely.
It'd be like Sainsbury's seling _everything_ at a loss instead of just the
cardboard bread and the milk) they must figure it should (eventually) turn
in a profit, even if the initial costs are higher than anticipated.

head, otherwise I'd have to say that, quite frankly, I'd have paid good

Same problem a year or two back with Cycling Plus.They offered a *free*
cycling shirt to new subscribers but were *overwhelmed*.I think most
people got one in the end,and very good they were,but some waited months
and months much to their annoyance if their forum was anything to go by.

Having been a subscriber to both the said magazine and its competitor
(both begin with 't'😉, I used to get miffed with all the free offers for
'new' subscribers when the long-suffering long-term subscribers barely
got a 'thank you', but there's nothing like a 'mag [censored]'...

I wonder if you'll be offered a headtorch? I've just taken them up on their
latest offer, a Tikka XP headtorch for £9 on top of the full subscription
price. Since I've already for a bothy shelter, that appealed to me more.

subscription.

There reply was that 12 months of magazines (£3.40x12) works out at
£40.80, but if you subscribe they will either give you a discount or
charge you full whack, but give you a 'free' gift.

Still not entirely sure which definition of free that is (not one I've
ever come across) :-(

In these cases, "free" means.
You pay for it in a way which is not immediately obvious to you.
