I prefer TGO. It's the only one of the existing mag's that has ever
given me the impression that it was written by people who actually get
out, walk and use the kit. I don't read the others any more.

alternative reading - once I've had a 'peak' (no pun intended ;-) ) inside
to see if there's anything of interest!
TGO do a discount subscription rate for some 'clubs'. I get mine through my
Glenmore Lodge Membership. Check it out before parting with your cash.

I find a really good deal via some internet site. TGO is written by in my
own opinion, very political peolpe! Trail is down to earth with much more
information generally.
If you go for one- suggest Trail.

Down to earth. Is that what they mean't when they gave the infamous
route off Ben Nevis?

If you get Trail you won't want to renew your subscription as it
starts to repeat itself.

For either it comes down to the goodies they offer for taking out a
subscription. If you are thinking about a sub and also happen to want
a new compass head torch or whatever the inducement is then get it
otherwise don't bother.

But pretending that the outdoors is an apolitical arena, however much we
may want that to be case, strikes me as pretending something isn't there
because you choose not to look at it.

I don't subscribe to either, but if I chose one to read over the other
it would be TGO for its greater breadth of coverage: it's likely to tell
me about things I can't easily do myself. With Trail I feel more a case
of why bother reading about walking rather than doing it? Trail is
pretty good if you're not already familiar with the game, but if you are
it won't (IME) tell you much you don't already know. And speaking as a
sad gear junkie and knowing it takes one to know one, I'd say they have
an unhealthier level of gear fetishism for the sake of it! ;-)

But somehow they never seem to review the really interesting kit! It
may be unfair, but when I see a sign in a shop telling me that X piece
of kit was voted 'Best of the Bunch' or whatever by Trail magazine I
generally shrug and move on. Perhaps things have changed, but that's
the impression I've been left with from when I used to get it fairly
regularly.

I'm surprised you can stay awake long enough to read them. I find TGO
incredibly boring - both in content and presentation. The articles can
sometimes be quite good but there are too few suggested routes and the
magazine has the impressino of being produced down to a (very limited)
budget.

I subscribed to Trail for years but got fed up with endless articles about
how great the Lake District is. I mean - how many issues per year can they
get away with printing yet another route up Scafell or Hellvellyn. or
deciding that Kendal is he best town in the country for hillwalkers, or that
some tarn in the LD is the BEST wild camp spot IN THE WORLD!! Another poster
reckoned Trail was aspirational, I'd say only for those with little
imagination.

Which interesting bits of kit have they not reviewed ?
I think most of what I use has been reviewed at some point (except
some new stuff that has taken till the next cycle of the seasons to be
reviewed)

newsgroup addict;

yes I think its called "AT" (Adventure Travel ?)

its not so much on technique, and its more global in destinations,
lots of looks at places in Europe for long weekends, and although
most articles involve the outdoors, it doesnt restrict itself to it.

I think Trail is a one year buy, as it does just rotate all its
articles, TGO the same but to a lesser extent. My main problem with
them is their obvious close relationship with the advertisers, but I
dont know how they would get around that without doubling the price.
