I've always thought that hooded capes are dangerous - surely the hood
restricts hearing and rear observation?

Very good for aerobatic stunts when you are overtaken by a 40 tonne
truck though....

I always advise riders not to wear hoods as they can restrict vision when
looking behind.

I have one similar, but from Tchibo. I tuck the hood inside the cape. It
does, however, have transparent panels to each side .
The cape keeps out the rain all day if necessary, but you soon build up a
pool between your arms. It is interesting to note how much sand also
accumulates. Cycling into the wind is difficult, particularly if you're
carrying an armful of hailstones, but you don't get as hot & sweaty as you
do in a jacket and your fingers are under cover.
There are a couple of interesting design features; see the guy's hands? They
protrude from 2 slits, which on my version are held closed by velcro. These
let in water if you're not careful, and have no practical use. Think I'll
get the welding torch out..
Also, mine is like the ones in the inset photo; cunningly disguised in a
fetching road colour. I might go get one of they jazzy ones tomorrow.

Got it. I won't be using the hood on this one either, but a trial session
suggests that visibility is not bad through the clear panels, and the
arm-holes are better positioned than my tchibo version.

In "Team on the Run" John Deering tells the story of one of the first
continental races the Linda McCartney team took part in. After a
puncture Julian Clark took a wrong turning and got lost together with
the team car which had stopped for him. The manager put Clark and his
bike in the car and spent the next two hours looking for the race. By
luck they found it and managed to get ahead of it. They turned into a
farm track and waited for the race to come by. The manager told Clark
to cover his number by putting his rain cape on, then to chase like mad
once the bunch had gone past. So after being off the back for 2 hours
in searing heat on a bone dry day a mystery rider suddenly rejoined the
bunch wearing a plastic rain cape.

How does she manage in a drought?

Well I dunno how she does, but I just smile sweetly. I did look completely
ridiculous wearing a cape in Thailand at over 40 degrees when it hadn't
rained in months, but the land is very flat and palm trees do not work as a
bush except for the very skinniest people.

And next week (21st) they have NiMh batteries at pretty low prices,
4xAA(2100mAh) for 1.99 for example.

I wouldn't care to guess. But, I have found the batteries and charger
from 7dayshop.com to be satisfactory.
