A few medals given out in tonight's first session, Womens 500TT saw Natallia
Tsylinskaya (Bielorussia) upset current World/Olymipic Champion/World Record
holder Anna Meares (Australia) for the Gold Medal with Yvonne Hijgenaar
(Netherlands) rounding out the podium. Since these two were of the last 3 to
ride, the podium wasn't decided till the very end. The Team Sprint
qualifying saw the top 4 teams all go under 45 sec. With the Brits,
Netherlands, France and Germany taking the top 4 spots, Germany took the
bronze from France, and in a real fast, real close final that wasn't decided
till last few meters, the Brits beat the Netherlands for the gold. The
points race was a blistering affair from the start, with several riders
getting a lap during the first 25 or 30 laps. A few more riders got off and
gained a lap and it looked like the top five or 8 places were fairly set, it
was just a matter of how they shuffled. Later in the race a few riders not
in contention sparked a surge in speed when they gained a lap and that set
off flurries of attacking. Juan Llaneras, (Spain) and a former world champ
was in 12th or 13th I think with like 8 points about 2/3 thru the race. He
made a huge late race effort to gain a lap and put himself in podium
contention the top five oir 8 spots shuffled with about 20 to go as Guide
Fulst was in the hunt for Gold most of the race found himself scrambled to
5th being leapfrogged by Christopher Newton (Great Britain) and Ioannis
Tamouridis (Greece) when they gained a lapthe top five rode out the last 10
or so laps and Volodymyr Rybin (Ukraine), Ioannis Tamouridis (Greece), Juan
Llaneras Rossello (Spain) became the podium and Christopher Newton (Great
Britain) and Guido Fulst (Germany) rounded out the 4th and 5th spots. Colby
Pearce (USA) just didn't seem to be in sync with himself, and ended up 13th.
Some of the personalities on hand were the recently retired Jen Fiedler who
I approached with a rising super junior female who has the last name Fiedler
and her older very good looking sister in tow. I asked Jens " Do you speak
English" , he replied "No" I then said " This is Catherine and Cassandra
Fiedler and they wanted to meet you". All of a sudden Jens started speaking
pretty darn clear English...It was pretty funny. Chris Boardman was on hand
in the GB pits. Tough for me to cruise around today as I was working the
event. Tomorrow I am off from working . Good events tomorrow, Women's
sprints, Men's Keirin, Mens Kilo, Men's IP and the Women's points race.
