TR: Y Garn

We tried Y Garn one weekend about 3 months ago. Idea was to trek up, from
the pass, hit Y Garn, over the Glyders to Devils Kitchen, Wild Camp and
return to Nant Peris. (possibly via Tryfan first)

Took a GPS with us (see comment below), but had to abort - mist was so bad,
I couldn't see me other half, who was only about 5m behind. Wind and rain
hitting our faces horizontally and literally bringing tears to the eyes.

GPS recorded we were less than 100m from Y Garn summit when we turned back -
dammit!

Oh wow!!! - sorry to post twice, but it just struck me that it was your

Y Garn is a great mountain in its own right.

Try approaching it from Nant Perris - up to Lln Y Cwm. You can then go up
the Glyders and back down and then up to Y Garn. Or climb from Pen y Pass up
to the Glyders and then traverse the ridge to Y Garn the descending to Nant
Perris (almost directly to the pub).

You could always look at the full Glyder traverse - which is almost always
too misty! Start at the Bethesda end and walk to Y Garn. If you're feeling
strong you can carry on over the Glyders from where it is a straightforward
(if longish) descent to Capel.

An alternative to the Bethesda start is to start from Deiniolen, from where
you can do the entire range, but you miss out on the quarries of Besda.
Cracker whichever point you start from, however!

It's certainly a good day out, best started from the Bethesda end. The
biggest problem with this is finding the way onto the ridge as the quarry is
more difficult to navigate these days. Once up high the early walking is not
too bad and very enjoyable. The biggest challenge is the walk up to the
Glyders from Lyn y Cwm. You could break this by wild camping somewhere near
here (although you'll probably find that you get here reasonably early so
long as you started early enough).

I've done the first section (to Y Garn) is virtually nil visibility, and it
was still quite enjoyable!

On our route that I described in the TR, it is very easy - a good path created specifically for
walkers and cyclists along the edge of the quarry heaps, which are being regenerated and planted.

That's what put me off the walk from Bethesda, access to the quarries.
The access from Deiniolen is no problem, a track leads you to about 600m at
Marchlyn Mawr, or you can leave earlier and start with Elidir Fawr. I did
this route last December, there's a TR on my website somewhere ;-).
It's easily do-able for a linear walk, if you start from Llanberis (however
you get there), from where a bus will take you to Deiniolen and at the other
end, the Sherpas run frequently to take you back to Llanberis.
