This is well worth knowing - thanks. It's good to be forewarned. I
camp or sleep in the car more than I B&B, but I like to enjoy B&B to
the full when we use them.

There's one just down the road whose name escapes me. When we
want to patronise the restaurant again we'll look into staying
there instead.

By the same token we stayed at the Eltermere Hotel last year.
It was slightly worn but the rooms were huge, the view stunning
and the price affordable. We ate at The Brittania.

I visited the restaurant back in October last year and was not at all
impressed. The service was offhand and slow, and the food was average
at best. My starter of battered okra was virtually inedible, and the
main course consisted of a large bland slab of fish with little in the
way of flavour in the accompaniments.

We went there on the recommendation of the Good Pub Guide but found it
very disappointing. It seems like the awards have gone to the
management's head and they have got ideas above themselves.

By contrast, the Queen's Head at Troutbeck was superb - delicious food
and beer, much friendlier and more down-to-earth, and considerably
cheaper!

Is that the pub at Barngates, a mile or two the road twixt Hawkshead and
Ambleside ? It's sort of between them, Tarn Hows and Skelwith Bridge in
that case.

Yes. They have thier own brewery (one the things that attracted me,
shallow fool that I am) and it is very good. 4 pints of Cracker without
the merest hint of fuzzines in the morning.
