I woke up on Sunday morning and had the feeling that there was going to be a
cloud inversion so rang my mate who thought the best chance was Sugarloaf
and looking towards the coast - he was not wrong but even he was taken aback
by the views! If I am honest I wanted to go up Pen Y Fan but was glad of his
choice. Leaving the house just after 9am we headed over the moors from Ebbw
Vale. I thought we might get an idea as we dipped over the top and headed
down into Crickhowell. Sure enough the clouds were low lying and as we
headed back towards Abergavenny I must admit I was gripped with excitement.
As I was only out for a few hours we decided to be real lazy - well we
wanted to be up on top as soon as possible really - we parked at the car
park above the Vineyard. From the freezing fog below the contrast in the sun
was incredible...so warm. We passed a few chaps who had been up very early
and I was gutted I had not got out before I did. We kept stopping to take in
the view to the South which was breathtaking but soon we were on top of
Sugarloaf. We plonked ourselves down just below the top of the south end and
sat there mesmerised for nearly two hours!! We could see the hills on the
other side of the coast and way beyond. I texted a work colleague who lives
in Newport and asked her how thick the fog was...like pea soup was the
reply. Aye I said I can see from my view in the sun what it's like ! I just
wish I had a decent camera to take pics of what we could see but below are a
few snaps I took....apologies to the pros here. As I got on the top I
passed a guy laden with camera equipment who was obviously keen. He told me
he had travelled up from Cardiff and as he had been in the fog until he
parked the car (in the same place as us) he was unsure if it was going to be
worth it. I gave him my email addy and asked if he would send me a pic -
Mark if you are reading this please send me one!

Anyway, here is a glimpse of the view...sorry about the quality etc.

I have to admit that the day was soooo good that I haven't stopped dribbling
yet!!!!! Cloud looks a little denser on Alan's photos from Sugarloaf,
indeed the entire drive in we were cloaked in mist. I always had faith in
the forecast though ;-) !!!!!!!!

This has just been pointed out to me - in my defence I'll say that I
hadn't actually processed any of the pics 'til last night. Haven't been
particularly inspired by any of my pics - tho' I'll get some over to
you tonight, Alan!

Wow, Lee, that's stunning images! I could have been there but didn't bother
checking the forecast and didn't get up early enough. Stupid me!

The far eastern end of the ridge (Carn Pica) and the walk up there from
Aber Village is quite good, too. At the bottom it's a bit of a bracken
jungle, but higher up it's really nice and unusually quiet for the Beacons'
main ridge.

As far as the driving was concerned, I went to Torquay on that Sunday.
Brakes failed at Sarn Park continued the journey in the back of a
Breakdown Truck. Had a great week in T'quay and got the car fixed at the
same time. The view from the breakdown truck was very limited due to
dense fog on the M 5.

there though when it would have been so much easier to take you straight
back home. Last time I came home in a breakdown truck was a couple of
months ago when I was driving my 'new' Montego home for the first time.
"How long have you had the car then?" "Oh, about two hours..." One
engine swap later and an adjusted alternator belt (who designs these
things? The only access to the drive belt is through a wheel arch)
later and I've got a worthy replacement for the minibus.

They're worth their weight in gold. Last night (this morning) I got
home at some ungodly hour due to my lights failing somewhere near
Coleford (Gloucs?). The man from the RAC fiddled with this, that and
the other without getting any meaningful improvement so rigged the
lights so that I could at least get home relatively safely. He then
followed me as far as Abergavenny, before leaving me to my fate on a
largely lit Heads of the Valleys Road. I think I must be jinxed where
vehicles are concerned :-(

Sadly I'm not sure that a decent tool kit helps much with modern cars. I
was picking my car up after a service a year or so ago, and was told
that they hadn't changed the spark plugs because they weren't sure if
they needed to be changed for this service.

'That's okay,' I say, 'I'll check, and change them myself if required.'

'Oh no you won't.' was the response, 'There's a coil fitted on top of
each plug, and you will need special tool KDJSFS/1234 to remove it.'

There's some species of Audi that doesn't even have a bonnet these days
isn't there? All work has to be carried out from underneath at the
dealer, no user serviceable parts inside. God knows what kids do for
cars these days, we were always taking the things to bits and putting
them back together.

I still carry a few spanners, screwdrivers, etc in the back of the car,
but I think it's a triumph of hope over expectation!

Sorry about you incident above though.

It's all sorted now, thanks to my very tame mechanically-minded friend
near Lampeter who rather foolishly offered to look at the light switch
'sometime'[1]. I'd recommend getting a decent toolkit *and* being a
member of one of the main organisations. That way, if a good samaritan
stops to help at least you've got the tools if he's got the expertise;
also if the good samaritan fails to show up or he can't fix it then you
can be prepared and phone for help.

[1] So I drove over today. Sorry, wasn't that what you meant? Well
you did say 'sometime', and you didn't specify when... :-)
