What a pity That you were on Picws Du is such horrible weather. You did
miss out on some lovely views because of that.

The two Llyns are delightful - honest :-)

re-erection of the cairn.

No cairn, it appeared to have been flattened, and on closer inspection
turfed over. Seem to recall a couple of other cairns in the vicinity
though - one of which marked a pretty quick way down to the Llyn :-)

So that's what they've done - remove the vestiges of an important
historical Cairn. We though they might be tidying up the od pile of
stones into some order again.

I remember seeing Wheatears nesting in the pile of stones in the middle
of the cairn but no turf.

To be honest I have never taken that much notice of the cairn on any of
my many visits (getting on for 50 I should think) but what little I can
remember is of an outer ring of flat stones that got rearranged
marginally from time to time and a pretty feeble attempt at a cairn
off-centre. Within the circle is mostly bare earth but round (or to one
side) of the cairn there is some grass which has obviously been relayed.
I can't be sure it was there before but if it wasn't where has it come
from and what is the point of grassing such a small area if it wasn't
grassed before?

The hut appeared earlier this year and was presumably there for the
excavators use. It was a very small affair, more like a large box than a
real shed but it did have an almost full size door.

There is an admittedly very rainy photo of the area - the outer circle is
there, but no cairn in the middle.

But was it the original historical cairn? Or one which has been
repeatedly modified over the years? I'm sure it's the site of an
historical cairn, but the current configuration may well not be the
original one.

I have photos of this cairn stretching back many years, I specifically
recall one I took of my brother standing next to it in perhaps 86 or 87.
When I get around to searching through my old photos I'll be able to
check what it looked like compared to current configurations. I'm
pretty sure it didn't look like the modern version in that photo. I'm
only guessing (vague memory) but I don't recall seeing the outer circle
20 years ago, I only remember a single cairn, but I may be wrong.

We have to accept that the site was at least more like a cairn than it
is now - that is what I meant. I've no reason to think that someone has
moved it from one place to another,

The only photo I have - which I found and scanned has a stone piles on
it. Probably not original in construction, but at least some semblance
of a cairn. The pile did stand within a circle of boundary stones
though.

My visit was in 2002 and the circle was there then and well established.

But given the character and trying to be objective... I have to plump
for that wild lump in the west... (Any Rhinog as close rival)

But ask me tomorrow and I will advocate another - its not exact...
But given that coincidence between mood and visit, Carningli was the
one...

Then there is Carnllundain, Carn llidi, Garn Fawr (Goodwick) and
thats just Pembroke.

I was recently asked by someone from Trail to nominate a favorite from
each 500' band.

Now would answer differently another time, but at the time I went
for

<500' Carnan Eoin, Colonsay
<1000' Arthur's Seat
<1500' High Vinnalls , Herefordshire (sentimental reasons,
childhood playground - there are better hills eg Carn Ingli!
<2000' Meall Alvie, Mar Magical forested hill.
<2500' Tiogra Mor, Harris Beaches, rock.narrow ridges , rock, 2001
A space Odyssy and more rock.
<3000' Favourite Corbett? No way could I answer that but I plumped
for a hill with two tops that are both Corbetts - Beinn Dearg (behind
An Teallach)
<3500' Tryfan (had to get a Welsh hill in somewhere and make a
point that Scotland has not got the total monopoly.)
<4000' Sgurr nan Ceathreamnan, but it could have been Bidean, or
Lochnagar or....

That leaves the Ben.. shame its not a wee bit higher >4500' then I
could have stuck Braigh Riabhach in as well.

Overall Desert Island hill - ie I had to pick one - Tiogra.

Look forward to the article and seeing if any of my nominations make
the grade. May even buy one for the first time.
