    I went to a conference in Edinburgh last week. We stayed in Pollock
    Halls (student halls they let out over the summer) - it was a bit like
    living in a police barracks for a few days as all the English crews
    that had converged onto Edinburgh because of the G8 summit where put
    in there as well!

    As Pollock Halls is right at the foot of Arthur's Seat, I had a quick
    stroll up there one evening. I had been there once before but that had
    been in cloud. The views this time were much better. I've put a few
    photographs on http://users.aber.ac.uk/ruw/album/050707.html .

    There is a very pointy hill right on the coast to the ESE (not on any
    of the photos) towards Berwick which looks quite interesting, but I
    can't find anything on my (road) map of the area.

    It's amazing how polished every bit of the rocks on the top of Arthur's
    Seat is. Thousands of years worth of tourists each day I suppose!

    Now the question arises, what's the highest bare hill within the built
    up area of a town? The only other one I could offer is Lykabettus in
    Athens at 277m, Arthur's Seat being 251m. Now, there's something to
    bag!

    Didn't get round to anything this weekend despite the good weather :-(

    That'll be North Berwick Law - http://tinyurl.com/djxyb - at 187m. Not
    a hill you'd necessarily go out of your way for, but nice enough if
    you're in the area. I haven't been up there for a long time now, but
    there used to be a whale's jawbone at the top.

    This hill also provided a useful marker for when I did a meteorology
    course at Edinburgh Uni. When estimating visibility from the top of
    the building, the first check was 'can you see the Law?' If so,
    visibility was at least 27 miles.

    Sadly, yes - but on my scale on "antiwindfarmness", this gets only 4
    out of 10.

    It is at least near a major population centre (and hence suffers less
    transmission loss) and is also close to an existing major power
    generation facility (and hence near to existing connectors and not
    requiring miles of new pylons).

    That'll be it. I would have thought it a little higher, but I guess
    that's just because it stands out so prominently on the coastline.

    Destroyed?? There are plenty of turbines up there already, I can see
    them from my window - I need bins mind. And dont see much of them
    from Arthur's seat.

    Next to a city and a big powerline, just the right place, in amongst
    the sitka - the place is trashed already.

    Save it for the really good places threatened by the subsidy miners in
    the Highlands.

    Point taken, I just loathe these things. I reckon these F'n turbine things
    could detract from Billingham or Grangemouth
