The Tour de France is all about tradition. Anyone can start their own race, like Tour of the World.
There are many things that seem anachronistic, but then its not the TdF. Almost all the US road bike
races are really boring looking. You just have some good riders riding through some roads and towns
where no one is watching except some relatives cheering them on.Here are some things I would like to see changed:
- end the feudal master/servant relationship within teams. This is the year 2003. Every rider is
able to ride from beginning to the end, like in the Olympics. I thought the French were for
equality!?!- The flat stages are pretty pointless for GC when 100 people get the same time. Figure some way to
do Olympic style lanes so everyone gets an actual time. If the problem is at the end of the race,
either widen the road at the finish line or let them squeeze in. It would be nice if they could
somehow have lanes like in swimming, but that's probably not practical- Right now the TdF is only open to Div 1-2 (?) teams, which means the peleton that races in Europe.
In the Olympics it is obvious that there are top cyclists throughout the world--not just racing in
Europe. If you get rid of the teams, then individuals could go to something like qualifying races
instead. If one strong cyclist came out of Antartica, then he could race.- Now the TdF is very tradition bound. If a recumbent is faster in the time trial, why not??? The
question is how much tradition is good, and when does it get eccentric?"Lance Armstrong is coming down the finishing straight like a Grand Prix MOTORCAR!!!!" -Bobke
