    Eliyahu,

I advise you to ask this question in the rec.bicycles.soc and rec.bicycles.misc groups. You will
likely get a better answer there than here.

And for future reference, if you happen to have a mountain or hybrid bike for sale, please post your
    message to rec.bicycles.marketplace, not here.

Probably not. Every mention of helmets sets off a battle there. The statement of the race rules
and what has happened in the actual tour this year should be enough; but it wouldn't be left at
    that there.

    Dumbass -

Don't run these stupid newbs off the group. They're fun.

Uhm, I have been working in the bike industry probably longer than you've been alive.... AND, had
had an accident while riding that had I not been wearing a helmet I would not be here typing this.

You're still a newbie, both to the group and to the Tour (at least this year's).

It doesn't prevent a crash but it increases the likelihood that you will survive a crash..... my
point is that these guys are setting a great example for kids..... are we now to teach our kids that
there are times when it is OK not to where a helmet ???

    ======================================
    1) Congratulations on getting your kid to watch the Tour. Most change the channel.
    2) Congratulations retracted on your inability to carry more weight with your kid than a sports
event on TV. Keep him away from watching baseball, unless he spends a lot of time where its cool
to grab your crotch/adjust your cup before and after you do anything (that and spitting - they're
    really into spitting).

Fortunately for society, there is about as many kids watching baseball as there are watching bicycle
racing of any kind. They're watching stuff like Angel or MTV and learning all sorts of cool stuff.

That's funny. I bet that if the kid crashes without a helmet, Mr "Parent of the Year" Eliyahu will
sue Lance Armstrong and the Tour de France for setting the bad example, because it is always better
to blame someone else for your own negligence and stupidity.

Perhaps what we need are Lance in some Barkleyesque "I am not a role model" tv ads.

  11. Since almost all cycling related major head traumas come from being run over by a motor vehicle.
It's certain you were run over by a car or truck in your accident, or at least struck by one. Look
up the actual crash data if you like.

If your weren't struck by a motor vehicle and still believe a helmet saved your life, then you're
probably a hysteric. Bicycle helmets are not designed to protect against major trauma. It's a flight
of fancy to believe they are. They are designed to mitigate minor injuries in impacts of less than
14 mph. Read the documentation that came with your helmet.

Thank you for buying into the fear mongering. Fear is what drives America and makes it great.

Nope, I was traveling down Boulder Canyon (in Boulder Colorado) doing about 40mph and hit a patch of
sand and my front wheel washed out.... I went over and hit my head on the road.... had it not been
for the helmet I would not be sitting here.... no vehicles were involved in my accident (other than
    the ambulance)

Well, maybe you need to get a new helmet then.... I suffered a grade 3 concussion, a broke collar
bone, a dislocated left thumb, and road rash all over my body.... had it not been for the helmet my
brains would have been all over the road

Hmmm, seems that the helmet I have protected me past 14mph.... like I said maybe you need to gt a
new helmet if yours is that flimsy.... this time try spending more than $5.00 at K-Mart

    Good Morning,

    Eliyahu Simchah

  13. I'm just stitting here with a broken collar-bone and a smashed helmet, after another cyclist touched
my wheel while going downhil at 30mph. I landed on my head. Judging from the helmet, I would have at
least fractured my skull. I might not have died but I could easily of damaged my brain.

Kivilev wasn't hit by a motor-vehicle either. I was wearing a helmet Kivilev wasn't. One of us is
    still alive. Go figure.

  14. On descents such as you describe, they are always wearing helmets - and have for years.... Is this
the first TDF you have actually watched?

Wow. You must have a skull comparable to an eggshell. I wonder whether you suffer from some sort of
degenerative bone disease resembling osteoporosis, but which affects only the skull.

I wonder whether this degenerative process gets into the actual brain tissue as well.

    Evidence suggests yes. 😉

  16. So Kivilev and Casertelli both had eggshell skulls too I guess....

I was reacting to his "brains all over the road" exaggeration.

Bike helmets are NOT designed for high-speed collisions. Period. Whether Kivilev of Casartelli would
have survived had they worn helmets is entirely unknowable. If they had had helmets, perhaps they
would still have tragically died, due to severe neck injuries or some other bodily trauma, or
perhaps, PERHAPS, just maybe, the helmets wouldn't have protected their heads quite well enough to
prevent death, since they aren't designed for nor capable of such in collisions at such high speeds.

    Ryan

  20. Perhaps is a pretty big word in this context. What is certain, in either case, is that the outcome
wouldn't have been any if they had been wearing proper helmets and maybe, just maybe, they might
have been riding in the ITT tomorrow.

I know how hard I hit my head when I came off at 30mph. I know that I didn't leave a big clump of
    scalp all over the road.
