OK, so here it is I'm sitting here watching the Tour De France for the past week and they show highlights from past stages of the race...... now in stage 2 Lance is involved in a pile up...... and in stage 15 he is dropped to the ground by a fan that caught his bars.
NOW, the one thing I have noticed through this entire race is that NOBODY IS WEARING A HELMET !!!! These people are the world elite in cycling and should be setting an example to those that ride bikes...... but not one of them is wearing a helmet...... Lance and Jan Ulrich both went down in the stage 15 (OOPS..... hit send to soon) and neither was wearing a helmet.
What is up with this ???
Can you imagine this...... a family walks into a bike shop and Mom says to 12 year old Johnny "Johnny you need to get a helmet" and Johnny says "Well, Lance doesn't wear a helmet"...... what is a mother or father to say to that ??? the top cyclist in the world doesn't wear a helmet.
BUT, Mom thinks for a minute and says to little Johnny "Well, Lance doesn't have any testicles so when you lose your testicles you can ride without a helmet"
Helmets have been worn for the vast majority of the TDF. You must not have been watching much! In fact, they are now compulsory. The only time that a rider can take off the helmet is when there is an uphill finish. (i.e. they can take them off at the start of the final ascent where the stage finishes at or before the top of the hill. However, if the finish line is beyond the top of the hill, helmets must stay on until the end.)

Closed roads. Championship performace at the utmost. Helmet rules except for certain end-of-race conditions. You're welcome.

Please, spare us the righteous indignation. Concern yourself with your riding habits, not that of others. Don't think you're a better person for placing demands on others.

You must not have been watching much of the race. Helmets are required except on mountain top finishes.
The only time you've seen riders without helmets this year was on the climbs.

Correct. After the death of Andrei Kivilev earlier this year, the international cyclists union (UCI) required all class 4 elite riders (who include those in the tour) to wear helmets; they can only be removed during the final climb when the finish is on the summit of that climb and when the climb is at least 5k in length.
