Tour de Georgia

I've done BRAG http://www.brag.org/ before but its not a race but a
tour, are you a member of a team thats going to the Tour de Georgia,
tent camping or CC (credit card) camp ?

in georgia, i would do what the europeans do --- take a motor
home. if you really want to see them as anything but a blur,
hill climbs are the place to be. try to find a curve where you
can see a turn or two below.

take binoculars & a camera with a zoom or telephoto lens. a
motor drive helps.

Last year, we found a spot on Wolfpen Gap where the road doubled back
on itself. We got there a few hours early and set up a picnic area.
We were able to see the riders climbing up the road below us, make the
switchback-type turn and then come past us. It worked out beautifully.
At Brasstown Bald we found one of the steepest sections on the
mountain. By then many of the riders were just barely able to stay on
their bikes. I have some pictures posted at

The crowds were quite large, so you will want to get there early. Keep
in mind that there are probably not going to be any restroom facilities
on the mountains. My wife is going with me this year. I am going to
have to make some potty provisions.

FYI -- Lance Armstrong recently announced he's coming back for (hopefully) a
repeat performance. Maybe you already knew that. But as you can guess, that
means the crowds will be much larger than the originally estimated (w/o

I assume they close the road up to Brasstown Bald?
Can you drive up early in the morning?

Years ago for Tour DuPont in North Carolina, I would try to map out a
plan to see the start of the race where the riders a warming up, it's a
great place to get close up pictures.

Then we'd drive (using interstates) to a mid point, watch a sprint then
hop back in the car to catch the finish.

That probably won't be possible, at least in stage 5.

The startlines and finish lines I'm told will have jumbo TV's to
broadcast the entire race from the motorcycle cameras, and maybe a helo
camera.
There is also a circus like atmosphere at the finish with vendor tents
and product demos and such,

IMHO be sure to schedule yourself for at least one finish line day.

I don't think so. We had to park at the bottom of the Bald and take a
shuttle bus to the intermediate parking lot.
