Total amount you have in the sport?

I'd say about $1300. I have a Mongoose Road bike I bought at [censored] for about $400, and Bridgestone Citylimit I paid about $300, two computers $200 and two pair of shorts $200 and other pumps, racks, lights, $200.

In the spring, I will be upgrading my road equipment and will be searching for a new higher end road bike and plan to budget about $2-3K for bike, shoes, pedals, etc...

Zero, when you subtract the commuting savings. [hey what about the food bill]

I've got a guy that spends around 20 G a year with me, mainly on labor parts and maybe a bike or two a year

I have a lot invested, but, I enjoyed about 411 hours of exercise and outdoors in the last year. How much is that worth? I know guys with motorcycles that don't spend that much time on their rides in 5 years. For me, the investment is worth it.

I originally got in the sport in '87 and made the most out of my $500 Cannondale R400, before I sold it for some ski cash. Got into tri's in the early 90's, bought a used Raleigh for $300, upgraded the Suntour stuff to 105, probably another $400 including Mavic MA40 rims. Later bought a used Pinarello frame $175 swapped the Raleigh stuff over, upgraded pedals, bar/stem and saddle (maybe another $200). Used that stuff on and off for about 9 years then upgraded to 9 speed 105 (conversion kit $250). Not bad right? In '02 I got bit by the cycling bug hard. Bought an Utegra equipped Pinarello Prince ($1,800), later upgraded wheels to Ksyrium Elites ($500) and Speedplay pedals ($100). Still sane right? 2004 went nuts, built a Pinarello Opera Frame ($1000 on ebay) with Record 10 (another $1000) Plus Proton Wheels ($400), saddle, bar, stem, pedals, Polar 725 total ($600), upgraded to Eurus Wheels ($550), changed my older Pinarello to Campy (another $400), few other upgrades to my b-bike (fork, better pedals, headset, $400). Throw in tires, chains, cassettes, tubes, cages and other small parts (conservatively $1000) and it comes to a whopping total of $9,575. I'm not even counting clothing, helmets, gu, lubes, drink mixes and labor (I do it all myself now, but I've used a shop from time to time), tools, trainer, workstand, thule racks etc...

I hope my wife doesn't read this. I promised to quit golfing weekly to "save" money..:eek:

I'm 50 now and have a heart rate of 74/115....plus I feel fantastic, not to mention the stress relief benefits...after a tough week at work it's great to go out in the open air for a good cranking session...you really can't put a $ value on all that IMHO....

Some people think it's rediculous to spend $800, $1000 or even $350 on a bicycle but don't think twice about dropping 6 grand on a snowmobile or ATV...

ive forked over about $13K-$15K total. that includes a set of zipp 404s, 2 powertap hubs (one in the zipp 404), zipp disc, Giant TCR Zero custom, plus lots of extras. not to mention 1.5-2 years of nutritional stuff. but ive got nothin else. no wife, kids, debt, bills. lol. no other hobbies competing for money.

Hmm probably something in the order of $15k over the past twelve months in our household, and will probably be $20k by xmas this year.

It's interesting to see the number of people who reply without providing the requested information. Rather than vilify other purchases or make justifications for bicycle expenditures, just tell us what you spent. Are you ashamed or something? I've spent ~$2500 for a Trek 5000 with misc. upgrades and accessories. My coworkers think I'm nuts, but I don't care... 😄

I've put a little over $8000 in my bike. If I include clothes, shoes, and those sorts of things, then the number is a lot closer to $10,000.

Same here, probably $8k-9k over the last 8 years.

ROI has been excellent, worth every penny. I'm in far better shape than I was 10 years ago.

Not too long ago, I was starting up a 1 mile climb, when a guy on a motorcycle passes and says - I'll see you at the top.

So I thought - yeah, I'll see you in the cardiac ward, ya pudgy [censored].

I have about $3000 in my bike, and about $2000 in clothes, tools and other things. In addition, I spend about $1000 a year for maintenance, and other stuff during the year. I ride a road bike and a commuter bike about 5500 miles a year and was able to sell my car last year. Car used to cost about $600 a month.

i totally agree. i'm 20 and in college but i can't wait to get out, get a job, and go buy a real nice cannondale and get rid of my raleigh grand prix.

In our household currently (me and gf)

My Roadie - $3k (Ultegra)
GF's Roadie - $4.5k (Ultegra, Easton EA70 and Aftermarket frame)
My DirtJump MTB - $3.5k.....new frame beginning of next year approx $1k (Bling)
GF's XC MTB - $1.7k (Shimano LX/XT)
My XC MTB - $1k (SS so no money on gears) 😄
New XC MTB for the GF on order - $2k (SRAM 9.0 and equivalent)

I would hate to even consider the money spent over the years. We both have commuted heaps so there are savings on petrol etc. Plus also fitness benefits of course.

I don't want to think about it :o I haven't regretted a cent of it, though. Well maybe that 7-speed geared hub, but that was an itch I had to scratch, and wasn't really all that costly in the grand scheme of things.

However I'm now at the stage where all my bikes are exactly how I want them, and couldn't "upgrade" no matter how much more money I could throw at them. (It's a bizarre experience actually, being able to rifle through an entire online store and thinking, "meh", to everything)

So from here on in I guess it's maintenance/wear and tear expenses only... HAHAHAHAHAHAA yeah right. 🙁 😄
