Top pull or bottom pull?

  1. Spec-ing a bike for a lady with arthritic hands. going to use a sram
    FD shifter(ratcheting friction) as she doesn't have thumb strength for
    a SRAM or shimano trigger. Question is, same FD, shifter, is under BB
    routing an easier effort or not? Engineers to work!!

    Routing with the smallest total degrees of turn should have the least
    friction and easiest pull, all other things being equal. One of the
    unequalizers would be the radius of the turns, where a sharp bend would be
    worse than a gentler turn of the same degree of rotation.

    That probably makes the top pull slightly easier to pull, but not by much.
    Maybe one of those newfangled electric jobs ... or better yet a single front
    ring with a wide range rear and then no left thumb is needed at all. If
    she's arthritic she probably won't be hammering the 53-12 much anyway ...

    But, you already knew all of that.

    I find top pull changers generally to require more hand pressure,
    Campagnolo Record OR, Shimano DOXT, Suntour XCPro. Not much experience
    with Sram Quarz.

    I'd run it on the bottom assuming your arthritic customer isn't going to
    have severe mud issues.

    They are meant to work both with the same shifters, so the leverage is
    the same. Leaves the friction of the cables. I don't think there is a
    lot of difference in that.

    How about using a Sturmey Archer pulley in either arrangement?

    Yes, that's been done. As well as a rivnut holding a gear pulley with a
    groove cut in it. A customer looped a gear wire aound the left chainstay
    with some teflon casing and even that worked.

    IME, the routing is less important than the shifter, the FD spring
    tension, and the quality of the cable and housing.

    I've had better results from good SRAM gripshifts than from *any*
    Shimano ones, BTW. (Yes, I've installed a few of the loathsome
    devices for others who do not share my opinion of them. I even keep a
    set of them on hand for such occasions.)
