Well pitting expensive motoring exotica against a marathon runner, a
climber and public transport, so far the best they have managed is a
virtual draw with public transport. Says not a lot for expensive
motoring exotica.

Very OT, but...

There's some interesting tradeoffs with that vehicle. Flat out at
250mph, it does 2.8mpg, has a range of 50 miles / 12 minutes at £80 a fill.

I'd like to know, given the fairly low flow rate of standard fuel pumps,
how fast to drive it to achieve the highest average speed.

And as an extension, what road vehicle is capable of the highest average
speed once fuel stops are considered? I doubt it's the Veyron;
unfortunately, it's not a (non-motor)bike either.

Whatever it is, it probably has room for a backup driver and a place to
sleep moderately well, so the motorbike may well be ruled out there.

M/Cs tend to have small tanks which limit their range. I'd be looking
at one of the Audi or VW direct injection diesels. There was an
interesting diesel engined car at Le Mans a couple of years ago it was
getting pretty close to matching the Audi R8, a little slower but ran
rurther on a tankfull but it was let down by the fact it was ripping
it's clutch to bits with all the torque the CAT tuned VW V10 engine
was developing. [1] There are rumours that Audi will be trying for
their own diesel powered LM prototypein the not too distant future.

[1] Available in road going form in the VW Touareg 4x4 and the
Phaeton. Where it puts out 313 PS and 750 Nm torque.
