  1. Anyone else have this or know anything about it? I had a blood test at the doctor's and I have too
much blood calcium (10.6). I have been taking 600 mg which is only 60% of the RDA. I don't drink
milk at all, I don't eat cheese or much dairy because it's not point friendly. He said to
discontinue the supplements and check again in 3 months.

  2. This is possibly two different things. Too much supplements, or you are not taking calcium into your
bones for some reason. You must must must remember to recheck in 3 months. It is probably nothing,
but don't forget about it. If you eat a lot of dark green veggies they are full of very digestible
calcium, so it is possible you are just getting too much for your age and body type.

  3. Suzy,

I had elevated calcium levels in my blood too about 6 years ago. When I was tested in 1996 they were
at about 11 and when tested in 1997 they were at
    13. The normal levels should be between 8-10. So when you are over 1-3 points like I was my doctor
was concerned. Even 1 point over is for concern. The supplements are not likely to be the
issue, but that you have a parathyroid gland that is not functioning properly. You have 4 of
these glands in your body and if one is not functioning properly it can cause you to have
calcium show up in your blood work. What will happen is the gland thinks your body is getting
too much calcium so it dumps it into your bloodstream, when you are actually okay with your
levels. So what is does is it starts robbing your bones of calcium causing them to become
weakened and fragile. After I was diagnosed with this in 1997, I had surgery to have the gland
removed. I am now doing just fine and my calcium levels are where they are supposed to be. I
would make sure that you are at least getting the RDA of calcium for your system. But as you
said you are only taking 600mg and that is only 60% of the RDA. If this is the first time your
levels came back elevated, then if you do have a malfunctioning parathyroid gland, it will show
that the calcium you were taking will not make a difference in your blood levels.

Just to let you know the surgery was fairly simple, I was in the hospital a couple of days and was
back at work within 2 weeks. The scar was nasty looking for about 6 months, but people now don't
even notice it unless I say something about it.

If you have any other questions about it I would be more than willing to help out, just drop me an
email or message me here. I would recommend you look up information on parathyroid (NOT thyroid-they
are two different glands, but located in the same area of the body) on the internet, I found a bunch
of info there when I was diagnosed and it helped ease my mind considerably.

As an infant I was on formula milk which had added calcium: I could not metabolize it, and it
floated about in my blood, making me hyper-calcemic. Hypercalcemia is more common than some people
realize. Long term side effects are something I don't really know about, except in children. 46
years later I still do not take calcium supplements as I am unable to metabolize the type used in
them. All my calcium comes from my diet, either from green leafy vegetables or milk products.

  8. What about calcium enriched cereals, breads, yougart or ice cream? There's calcium in a lot things
that we don't think to add. I just discovered some BBQ flavored soy crisps that have calcium,
    vitamin D and K added.

In any event, the condition should be followed closely as it might be leaching calcium from
    the bones.
