Why wasn't Tom Danielson chosen to be part of DC for this years TDF? Anyone know? Will Hincappe wear #1 or poppo or salvodeli? Just looking for some educated responses for a non cyclist who loves watching the Tour. I thought for sure Tom would be on the team after his finish in the Tour de Georgia.

They chose him to be in the Vuelta - probably a better race for him at least this year.
Who will wear number 1? Interesting question. Who wore #1 in 1999? 1998's first and second place weren't racing, third place was Julich and I think it was he who wore #1. So if those same rules apply that would make Basso rider #1... not sure if a rider has the option of refusing, doubt if Basso would mind.
In Tour of California this year - inaugural year - there was no number 1.

By #1 on the team, I assume you mean who will be the team leader (the protected one). Word from the team is that there will be no single person chosen before the race. The protected rider will be decided during the race. There are 3 who are capable .. hincapie, popovych, savoldelli. And who knows who else ..

You forgot Ace, he is the only of the 4 that has a top 10 O/A in the TdF. He scored a 5th place in final GC, while riding support for LA. How can he do if riding for himself? -
