s/sometimes/often/ at least in London. I used to think the ones
in The City were bad until I cut through the West End one rush hour.....

On the plus side, now the weather is starting to turn there are
fewer "fair weather" cyclists to get in the way.

As someone who has had the honour of being knocked off by a pedestrian, it
might not be as simple as you suggest. Did you step off the pavement into
his path? did you look before you stepped off the pavement? did you just
assume that because you couldn't hear a car coming, it must be clear? were
you wearing bright clothing? or were you clad in black and virtually
invisible?

And do you really think that something which is 6ft tall and weighs 15stone
is a minor obstruction? See the thread about a 32 year old teacher being
killed by a ped walking straight out into the road in front of him.

I'm a cyclist.Of course I checked behind me. There was also cars passing at
the same time. I would suggest that the cyclist should have given a lot of
room judging by the fact that there were hundreds of people filling the
pavement.

Well, unless he was lying down his height is going to make little
difference to how much of the road he obstructs.

At least, I usually go around the pedestrians instead of up one side
and down the other, but then i don't have a triple chainring and those
inclines are tough work on a double.

To be honest, if it was me, I'd have considered stopping to whack you. You
stepped off the pavement, and apparently either didn't look or just didn't
care that there was a cyclist approaching. Would you have done the same if
it was a car or motorbike?

most amusing. I was making the serious point that any pedestrian stepping
out in front of a cyclist is an obstruction, and in the bit you snipped,
that a cyclist had just died because a pedestrian stepped out in front of
him.

Whilst my sense of humour has been described as warped, I haven't yet sunk
to the level of making jokes about dead cyclists.

How about he stepped off the footpath, having checked, then some time later
the cyclist came along and shouted at him? 10 seconds is plenty of time for

Eh? Did you read what he wrote? He _was_walking_ in teh road. There
was not teh slightest hint of an imminent collision, not teh slightest
hint that the OP was causing any hazard to teh cyclist, but you decide
he must have suicidally flung himeself directly into teh path of said
cyclist.

Not so, or at least not in any useful sense, and certainly not in the
legalese sense of causing an obstruction.

Also, in teh account of teh incident, tehre was no mention of
"stepping out in front of" the pedestrian in question.

we'll never know if things could have been handled any better.

I'm not saying elyob hasn't told us everything, but the simple fact is
that it's his perception of what happened, and it's quite possible that:

a) the cyclist was indeed a bit of a [censored], or:
b) cyclist had a good reason and the situation from his perspective was
completely different.

None of us is in any position to say who was right and who was wrong.
elyob believes the cyclist to have been behaving badly, this may well be
right. But we will never know, because none of us were there, and we
don't have the cyclists side of it.

I doubt I would have, as the cars that passed had no problem with the fact
that I (and others) was forced into the road and therefore took the
responsible decision of not getting irate.

Yes, I assumed that's what you were doing :-) I have to say I think he
probably was too, based on what you've said, but thought it would be
worth pointing this out before we all went too far down the spiral of
asserting what happened, when the only people that know are you and he.

Though I suppose it must while away the long dark hours in winter, eh ;-)
