  1. I'm so sad I could cry for hours!!! I'm fat and depressed.
I've been seeing a counseller for the past few weeks because
of my low self-esteem and eating habits.

I was bulimic for 8 years (14-22). Then I concquerred that
by taking mass amounts of pure ephedrine for 6 years (I was
very thin then but also a nervous nutcase). Then I got my
act together, asked myself what I wanted out of life. I quit
taking ephedrine. I decided I didn't care if I got fat
(which I did). I went back to school, graduated, got a good
job, met my husband and got married. My husband is
everything to me but I've been eating uncontrolably and I've
gained 25 lbs since we were married 2.5 years ago.

I 've tried countless diets over the past couple years ...
I just can't stop eating. I suggested to my husband that I
thought I should join Weight Watchers. He said yes, I
think that is the best plan out there and that would be
the best birthday gift you could give me. (I was asking
him what he would like for his brithday prior to that) I
was crushed... that isn't a birthday present for him! I
didn't realize HOW fat I really am and that I must disgust
    him and turn him off.

What are the weight watchers meeting like? Will they give me
lots of pointers to stick to it and quick meal ideas?

My husband is 6' 182 lbs 13% body fat. He goes to the gym
everyday. I'm 5'5" 165 lbs 39% bodyfat. I hate to go out in
public other than to work. I won't go out with our friends
because I feel to fat to deserve to go out. I feel like I
would be an embassment to my husband. He tells me he loves
me all the time and he does many romantic things for me. I
couldn't ask for a better person to share my life with.

Do you think WW will work for me? I will still go to my
    counseller.

    Thanks in advance

IMO weightwatchers will work for most people if they stick
to it. But thats a big if. Most people don't stick with a
diet, and even more don't change the way they eat to keep
the weight off for any length of time. What works for the
successful people is to take a diet they can live with and
change it a little to suit them.

You seem to have a history of problems with food, so
whatever you do it's not going to be easy. WW works, so
if you can stick with it you can firstly bring your
eating under control and secondly start to lose weight.
Remember that stopping weight gain (maintaining) is
success in itself. Of course losing weight (at any rate)
    is a greater success.

What does your counsellor think of WW? If she/he doesn't
like it or know anything about it then you are unlikely to
get the support you need. If your counsellor approves then
that's a big advantage on your side.

You have beaten bulimia and realized that ephedrine use long
term isn't an answer, so apply that commitment to changing
your way of eating and you can suceed.

Whatever you decide - good luck.

  3. WW will teach you to eat healthy and if that is what you are
looking to learn it is the right place for you.

You may also want to discuss with your husband by what he is
refering to when he wants you to go to WW for his birthday.
He may mean he wants to see you happy and if WW would help
make you happy then that is what he would want for his bday.

  4. Pardon the pun, but what have you got to lose by trying the
meetings? It can be a great support group for people wanting
to lose weight. Just remember that WW is not meant to be a
diet but a way of eating for the rest of your life. It is
very easy to follow and gives you a simple way of eating
healthy. At 5'5' 165lbs you don't have that much weight to
lose. I wish that I had started WW years ago. If I had I
probably would not have let my weight get up to 245lbs.

Take that first step and try the meetings. What have you
    got to lose?

  5. Hi Kerri, welcome to the group! You do seem to have some
issues to get back under control, and sound like you've
taken some good steps in working on them. I am glad you are
seeing a counselor and that you are continuing to go. That
self-esteem is hard to get under control, been there done
that - and still fighting with myself at times. <G>

You are not fat, get that idea right out of your head. You
might be slightly overweight, but nothing major. I am only
an inch taller than you and started ww at 228 ... some have
had to lose more than myself, some less. But we all made the
decision to change our lives, which inevitably brought us
together ... here ... seeking the same goal ... better
health, better self-esteem, better lives. You can do it too!

Maybe those other diets didn't work for you because you
weren't ready to really do the work? Or maybe because they
were just that ... diets. WW is something you can do for
life, not a diet. Diets have an ending. What happens when
you *end* and go back to your old routine? You put the
weight right back on. WW teaches you that this is a way of
life. It doesn't end when you reach your goal. You continue
with the habits and changes you have made ... forever. It
    works, if we work it.

I do agree with your logic that you joining ww is not a gift
to your hub, it's a gift to yourself. But being crushed by
his comment seems to me to just be another one of those self-
esteem issues you are working on. You know your hub loves
you, he shows it in his actions. I think that maybe he meant
that seeing you be happy and healthy would make him happy,
and that would be a better gift than any material object.
Kind of like the same scenario where a hub gives a wife a
holiday gift to a health club ... wife thinks that means hub
thinks she's fat ... regardless as to the fact that wife has
been wanting one forever. It's a rocky road that those men
have to walk on when dealing with us women. <G>

I KNOW ww can work for you, it CAN work for most everyone.
It isn't a miracle or magic though, and will only work if
YOU are ready and willing to do the work. We all get out of
it exactly what we put into it.

I wish you the best of luck in whatever decision you make,
and hope to see you post often here.

  6. welcome to the group, first I think it is a wonderful present for your
husband, if you get healthier you will live longer and I think that was what
he was saying, he wants you healthy so you can share life together. I love
the meetings, and the tips and the support. WW will work if you work at it.

  7. Don't cry - do something about it! You're already doing a
really good thing by seeing your counsellor, now to put it
into practise. Going to WW (or just eating well) is a good
thing for *you*, and has really positive effects on all
those around you. WW meetings are great (for me). They help
with the empotional side, as well as giving me great ideas
for what I should and shouldn't be eating. Anyway, enough of
that - here's the official welcome notice!

Welcome to this great newsgroup where you'll receive lots of

Here's a short synopsis of the USA program by Joyce -

How many points you can eat is only based on your current
weight, as you lose weight those points allowed will
decrease (logic is that your body will need less to
operate). At 183 pounds and based on the new US flexpoints
system, you will have a set point target of 24. In addition
to this you are allowed 35 flexpoints to be used throughout
the week ... as well as any activity points you earn on a
particular day. When your weight drops to 175, your target
drops to 22 points ... weight reaches 150, target once
again drop to 20 points. 3 servings of dairy of recommended
per day, 5 servings of fruit and veggies, minimum of 6
    glasses of water.

To calculate food and activity points, I love this computer
    desktop calculator ...
    zythra.compoints.exe

The basic plan is easy. Eat at least your minimum daily
number of points. Points do not carry over from day to day.
You are allotted 35 weekly flexpoints to be used at your
discretion ... can divide them up and use daily (would be an
additional 5 points per day) or save them and use them for a
special occassion during the week. Activity points are
earned based when exercising, but can ONLY be used on the
    day they are earned.

If you can afford $15/month, the online ww program might be
a great thing for you to look into. There is lots of
information available, as well as the food point database
    and journaling system.

Joyce WW starting weight: 228.8 - 2/5/02 current weight:
    133.3 Lifetime: 4/4/03

Please note that if you live in onther countries (UK,
Australia, NZ, Europe), the Points plans are different. The
UK and Australia/NZ calculate points based on saturated fat
and total kilojoules. Most of Europe calculates based on
total fat and total kilojoules. The desktop calculator above
can handle all of these programs.

unusual in that most of the people who participate are
respectful, considerate folks who freely share their
experience with and knowledge of WW, weight loss, and
maintenance. Yet occasionally, spammers, trolls, and flamers
show up to post advertising, false information, insults, and
the like. Nearly all of the time, people like this are just
trying to yank someone's chain. Most of the regulars on this
newsgroup offer their experience as a suggestion to try if
you're stuck, but are quick to advise that each person has
to find what works for him/herself. If someone posts
something that doesn't sound right to you, ask the

Low self esteem is a big factor in weight loss for a
lot of people. To lose weight you may need to learn to
    love yourself.

Complex history there, but at least you know how you got

I 've tried countless diets over the past couple years ...
I just can't stop eating. I suggested to my husband that I
thought I should join Weight Watchers. He said yes, I
think that is the best plan out there and that would be
the best birthday gift you could give me. (I was asking
him what he would like for his brithday prior to that) I
was crushed... that isn't a birthday present for him! I
didn't realize HOW fat I really am and that I must disgust
    him and turn him off.

Rubbish! I'm sure what he reallly wantds for his birthday is
a HAPPY wife, fat or not! He probably wants you to be
healthy and happy, and THAT would be the best present you
could give him! Slim is a nice optional extra! 🙂

What are the weight watchers meeting like? Will they give
me lots of pointers to stick to it and quick meal ideas?

They are allk different, but most are extrememly supportive.
Mine are in the UK, so will be different if you are not.

At mine we weigh in first, sit having a cuppa and catch up
on the news with our friends, and we have our
congratulations session (happy losers, people who have got
to goal or reached milestones, help and advice for the less
happy... ). Then we might have news of new WW produtcs or
other stuff that's good, a recipe tasting, whatever...

We also have a raffle - I've won a bag of fruit or veggies,
a bottle of wine, and a cook book so far! Not all meetings
run them - like I said, they are all different.

friends because I feel to fat to deserve to go out. I feel
like I would be an embassment to my husband. He tells me
he loves me all the time and he does many romantic things
for me. I couldn't ask for a better person to share my
    life with.

Sounds like a nice bloke. Why don't you go with him to the
gymn? They'd work out a program for you that would suit and
    boost your fitness levels.

Do you think WW will work for me? I will still go to my

WW will work for ANYONE so long as thet stick to the
program. It isn't a diet - it's a way of living the rest of
yopur life as a slimmer, healthier person.

  10. thank you to all of you for your comments and thoughts.

I really like the idea that maybe my husband would like to
see me happy. That would in turn get us out doing more
things. then maybe I can join the gym and go every evening
with him. I would really like that!

My new plan is to join WW. Once I'm down 20lbs I can
    join the gym.

Thank you everyone! I feel much better now!

    Kerri

  11. I am sooooooo glad to hear this. Sometimes all it takes is
someone unbiased to talk/vent to, to make us see things in a
much more realistic light (guess that's why I liked my
counselor years ago). The hubby just wanting you to be happy
makes more sense now too. If he is currently going to a gym,
I bet he would really enjoy it if you were to go with him. I
know my hub always asks me to join him in the basement when
he goes down to work on his new bike ... looks so
disappointed if I say no - so I've taken to humoring him a
bit and doing two workouts a day.
    <G>

But why wait until you lose 20 pounds to join him? Why not
just do it now? No one in the gym is going to even know
you're there, you'll be amazed at how you just blend into
the background. Everyone else is busy with their own thing.
And exercise is so beneficial to depression. It releases the
good stuff in the brain (sorry, don't know the technical
terms) to aid you in feeling better, and has been highly
documented. And getting an earlier start on the exercise
will only help you in the weightloss department. Looking
back at myself, I do wish I would have taken the exercising
up so much earlier than I finally did.

Nice to hear you're joining us, and good luck on your
journey. I hope you find it as much fun as I did (and
    still do).
