I have the Zefal, but haven't used it in years. If you have a floor pump with
a gauge it makes life simpler.

pumping tires for a few years you shouldn't really need a gauge at all.

I determine beforehand how many strokes of the HPX I need; then, on the
road, I can just count.

Can someone tell me how to properly use this gauge on a presta valve?
The only way I can use it without causing a loss of 20 psi due to air
leakage is to use a finger to firmly cover the other (Schrader) end. Is
there a better way to use it or I just have a faulty one?

I'm partial to digital gauges; there are two common styles, probably
all manufactured in one factory, sold under a million names.

Online/MO retailers of bicycle stuff sell them often as "Topeak" or
any of a million other brands. These give you pressure in PSI, Bar,
or (IIRC) KPA, and work on both Schrader and Presta valves.

only works on Schrader valves, and is way overpriced at this link.
It ought to be $5 to $8; it comes free with cheezy package deals, I
got one with a gift set of some sort, and another with a $20 car
ogranizer/beer cooler. It works well, though.

You must have weak thumbs. If that approach gives you trouble, you can just
ride a bit, over/under pressure changes the ride feel; after all, experts
report being able to detect the difference in frame material that way.
