Tire failure sagalette

  1. Continuing months-earlier remarks about tire failures no longer being
    the usual puncture, or worn-tread-through-to-tube variety I'm used to,
    now the last several failures have been in the cords

    the tire started going bump bump bump, and quick inspection revealed
    the tube easing through a cord break. There's lots of tread left
    on this ``slick'' MTB tire, so it's not a wear matter.

    Letting air out reduced the tube-burst threat and let me go 20 miles
    to home, fortunately. I don't carry spare casings.

    It's been a few weeks of going around in 0 degrees F weather, is all
    that's been happening. I don't do curbs or rocks or jumps, just
    commuting.

    In this case the amount of tread left does not matter.
    From your picture of this tyre, the rubber in the sidewall is perished.
    In my experience it was only a matter of time until something like this
    would happen.

  3. Hi Ron,

    It could be that this is an old tire, and for the most part it looks worn
    out. I had a tire do the same thing and I was surprised when it let go all
    of a sudden and then I limped home. My bike was left outside in the weather
    and fully exposed to sun. I am sure that the sun rotted the rubber and the
    tire blew open.
    On another note:
    Rotten inner tubes from Performance bike....
    I was riding my bicycle and got about 17 miles from home and I got a flat. I
    figured, well I have a new tube in my saddle pac and I change out the tube.
    When I installed the tube it would not inflate. I figured it must be the
    pump is bad. Then after testing the pump, and finding that it did work, I
    figured it must be the valve stem on the new tube, or something, so I took
    the tire off again and looked for the problem. I found that the rubber tube
    was shredded along the seam, where it is folded flat. I mean 1 to 2 inch
    defective rips. I was stuck about a mile from a bike shop, and it turned out
    the performance bike shop that I bought it from. They gave me a new tube
    no-questions-asked.
    I walked in bear stocking feet for a mile to get there.
    On another occasion I had a rotted performance bike tube that I took out of
    the box that I had stored in my back yard shed. It too was also defective
    and shredded along the seam.
    I have tubes in my shed that I use to wrap tree limbs for steaking, and the
    rubber is still good, tubes with patches, but the rubber is still good.
    Performance tubes are questionable to say the least. But I have not had a
    Performance bike tube rot while on the bike and have it fail. Seems that
    these tubes don't like being stored for long- they rot.

    The first two look to me like too-wide tires for the rim and perhaps
    underinflation. The third looks like a tire that has been stored poorly
    near an ozone source or in the sun too much, so that the rubber has
    "dried out" and cracked, and eventually failed under casing tension.
    The chords just pulled apart as the casing cracked.

    couple of months ago and it has a very similar failure. The funny thing
    with mine is that it has much more tread, and it's been in storage for a
    couple of years, nowhere near an ozone producer and definitely out of the
    sun.

    It was in a basement, never got over 85 degrees. The only thing I can
    think of is that the basement was flooded with a thin film of water
    during one El Nino winter but none of my other tires had a problem and
    when I brought it up in r.b.t. before CF pointed out that lots of
    abandoned tires end up in the rivers, lakes, etc, where they don't rot
    like my tires did.

    Just to mention something about rubber tires, and not bicycle tires. My
    brother was given a set of new tires. A of his friend had upgraded to new
    wheels, he got the new rims with tires from his friend and decided to leave
    50% of tread tires on the rim in my garage. Well they stayed in my garage
    for like 5 years until I just wanted them out. I called the junk yard and he
    said bring them over - for free. I pumped up the tires and one of them
    wouldn't hold air it was so cracked. All the tires were to the point, that,
    being cracked, would probably fail on the roadside if anyone put them on
    their car.
    I'm just saying, that, rubber is funny that way. I have 10 years old
    bfgoodrich tires on my truck and they seem ok.
    I have a spare boat tire that I leave outside for 3 years now, and it seems
    ok.
    Can't understand it or explain it, how some rubber just deteriorates.

    Tubes will rot if left in storage for too long due to atmospheric
    ozone. I have had several tubes do this. I now store my tubes in
    zip-lock freezer bags to keep out the ozone and haven't had a problem
    since.
