I do have a MET helmet somewhere that I wore the first few couple of times I cycled across London -
when in Rome, etc. I remember it costing about thirty pounds a couple of years ago. I don't like
wearing a helmets, but it didn't seem unduly uncomfortable and after messing around with the straps
for a few minutes, it seemed to fit correctly. It has of course never been in a crash, and wouldn't
have protected my knee very well anyway. :-)

Oh, whoops, here comes trouble.

I have recently acquired a Met Parachute which I wear to do Very Silly Things in, off road. The is
stronger than a normal cycle helmet, and has a face guard (although this isn't very strong). When
not doing very silly things, I don't wear a helmet.

It's common sense that helmets will protect your head from bumps and scrapes in low speed impacts.
What happens in higher speed impacts is more controversial, but bicycle helmets are not very strong,
and it isn't really clear from the available evidence whether helmet wearing has any significant
correlation with surviving an accident.

So read the evidence before deciding whether to buy and wear a helmet. A good place to start is John

Different heads are different shapes, and so are helmets. I personally find Specialized ones okay (I
have an Airwave) and would buy another, but best tactic is to try a load on for size and get the
most comfortable one (that should be synonymous with best fit, and thereby most protection).

I don't always use it, especially on long rides. Quite often wear a Buff or Polar Buff, and either
can also act as a helmet liner in the cold (with the fleece on the P-Buff as a scarf and light bit
under the lid) if I do have the hard top on.

The only thing you can do is try them on. This is where your LBS comes into its own. I find Giro
helmets sit too high on my head, I don't like the fit of Specialized and even some of the MET
helmets are uncomfortable. I currently wear a middle of the range MET but I must have tried on at
least 15 helmets to find one with the right fit. A badly fitting helmet is worse than none at all
because you won't enjoy your cycling, will either stop wearing the helmet or stop cycling.

Specialized still run an exchange replacement scheme if your helmet is damaged in an accident.

Parcel it up, sent it back with a description of the accident circumstances and IIRC a cheque for
£12 and you will get a shiny new replacement helmet to the same standard as your original.

Pricey indeed. If it's just commuting etc, a helmet's no good anyway; spend the money on extra
lights for real safety. You'll be safer and might have some cash left for beer.

You ask what I wear. Well, as I have yet to take up dangerous sports I have no need of a helmet. So
I go for comfort; nothing on top in summer and something waterproof and/or warm in winter. Lowe
Alpine mountain cap is just the ticket.

I would have gone for the Strad/Ippogrifo but they did not have it in yellow. Anything in that price
range from Giro is also very good.

As they probably do bugger all in an accident, and they all meet the same lax safety standards, you
might as well get a cool looking one.

The Giro Mira seems like good value, and I might buy one for those occasional forays onto the
velodrome, where the nazis insist I wear one. My current Specialized Sub 6 is about as comfortable
as a hangman's noose.

I wear a woolly hat when it's cold or raining. Just my hair when it's not. Not a barehead yet
(reckon I'll have decent coverage till I'm about forty).
