Hi, I would like to do some time trials next year, and wondered if anyone
has real advice on how to prepare oneself for the time trials for a
beginning novice, that is starting racing.
Thank you ahead of time for your help!

Joe Friel's book, Cycling Past 50, has an excellent section on such training
(pages 67-69 focus on the training) The training advice is really good for
any age.
Thank you. I wouldn't have looked into that book, as I am not yet 50, but
if the necessary instruction is there, I will get it.
Thanks again!

Training: do the miles, do intervals. Just like normal bike training,
although you need to focus more on endurance and less on sprint efforts.
Racing:
First, get an idea of what you can do out training. Perceived effort is not
a brilliant guide here, since the first time you get started by a real
starter rather than getting to a training start-here point the adrenalin
will screw up perceived effort. But you'll probably have to go by that; do
several and you'll know the way your body reacts. A club weekly series is
good.
Second, make sure you're properly warmed up when you get to the line. That
means you need to have been out cycling for at least 20 minutes, and you
should have been going reasonably fast for some of it - do a couple of
minute intervals at or slightly over your intended pace, at least. If you
don't warm up properly, you'll notice that a few miles in to the time trial
you start to feel better and go faster. Next time, do more to warm up, play
around with it and find what works best.
Third, if it matters, don't try to save anything for the end, pace it like
you were doing half a mile less than than distance. If you care about the
result you'll be able to keep it going.
Fourth, get up to speed ASAP, but don't try to go like a rocket for the
first bit - even pacing is better, there's no-one to psyche out but
yourself.
Fifth, ignore other people on the course. If someone goes past you, maybe
they're faster, maybe they're going to blow, maybe you'll be overtaken up
every hill and then go past them on every downhill; it doesn't matter. Keep
your rhythm, don't try to follow them. Most of your competition hasn't
started yet, or has already finished, you can't affect them.

Get a powertap. Perform tests to determine your watts at threshold.
Do a lot of 20 minute intervals at your LT power.
In between training, sleep a lot and eat well.
Work on getting into a very aerodynamic position. Train in
this position.
Thanks, that is really good insight!

Those who are not yet 50 may NOT browse, peruse, or purchase that book. If
you are 49 and your birthday is in a month with a "K", you may look at the
table of Contents.
(One of my encyclopedias in the 50s had a 'special' book about human
reproduction that required parental permission to purchase and a form to
send in. My parents were progressive and got this 'volume of advanced
knowledge' and I saw a picture like a squid holding two baskets, or a hydra
holding pies under it's armpits. To this day I wonder about that.)
