Disagree.
As the metabolism slows, eat less.
There's no reason extra weight and the associated health risks are inevitable.

Henry,
I am sure Roche wanted to improve his image:
- he wrestled with the idea of going public for a photo, he being so fat and knew he would be in for
some RBR dissin' (he reads RBR)
- but was outweighed by the instant image improvement by posing next to Wonder Man Tyler Hamilton!Simoni's doing the same with King Lance. Simple psychology 101.

That's fine. The empirical evidence is against you. People gain weight as they get older and I
*believe* the drive to eat to adjust weight is built in.Quoted message said:

I can't disagree with that. But I really doubt you could conversely prove that an extra ten pounds
(over 30 yo race weight) on a 160 lb fat master (not me) posed any sort of health risk whatsoever.
The question is of "too much," not simply a bit more. -

People gain weight as they age because they are less active and more sedentary.

There is probably a point of diminished return.
If you have noticed, elite riders are always are the verge of being sick with colds, stomach flu and
other minor problems. But that is nothing compared to a fat persons potential illness's.

Empirical evidence, when it comes to weight, means [censored] in this society.
Empirical evidence also says that the majority should be Fatties.
Not so.

Testosterone plays a part in the amount of fat being stored and muscle growth. As men age the amount
of available testosterone decreases.-WG

Empirical evidence, when it comes to weight, means [censored] in this society.
People have been gaining weight as they age regardless of society and time unless they were under
hard labor or restricted calorie diets. (There is nothing uniquely "natural" about hard labor and
restricted calories.) Maybe the Nilotic's (very unique) have a pretty flat weight curve through
aging, but most peoples don't.Quoted message said:
Empirical evidence also says that the majority should be Fatties.
That's too vague to mean anything. Yes, they "should" gain *some* weight in that it is perfectly
normal to do so. No, they "shouldn't" be unconcious of putting on an unhealthy amount. I suppose you
would say too that it is unnatural to start growing nose hair and ear hair after 40 years of age,
and not popping as many boners, but there isn't a lot that can be done about these very real
hormonal changes. People naturally change throughout the course of their lives -- deal with it. I
grew 1/4 of an inch in height in my forties. Some day my hair will probably turn white too. There is
nothing special about body weight that calls for it to be static across age -- there is more likely
be a moving range for individuals. Static weight is a prima facie dopey notion. There is no reason
for it; there is no evidence that it is uniquely healthy.Quoted message said:
Not so.
You're wrong. People gain weight as they age, until they hit the crest towards old age and then
begin shrinking (maybe you should graduate to the epidemic shrinking problem of old people).
Deal with it. -

No allowance for the chemical changes that mean keeping fat off requires more than just eating less,

Aside from bike racing, which punishes weight:
Why eat less? Why avoid gaining a few pounds?
Chicks think I look better at 10-12 lbs over my race weight. I would rather pop one of my few boners
and get some action than win a stupid amateur bike race. I think my priorities are in order. One thing I've found nice about aging is that I couldn't gain weight no matter how much I ate when I
was under 38 yo or so. Now I can finally put a few on, or take a few off. That is very cool.Quoted message said:

On the other hand, I enjoy hearing all you have to say about fat, fat, fat,...
It's funny to watch someone with an obsession, whether it be eating ice cream or blabbering on about
fat, fat, fat,... -

No allowance for the chemical changes that mean keeping fat off requires more than just eating
less, all else being equal?Empirically, I've found that eating less (and exercising the same) works.
It makes sense. There's no reason that older has to equal fatter, other than the excessive caloric
intake of our culture. -

shrinking (maybe you should graduate to the epidemic shrinking problem of

%)?Because I eat less.
BTW, I weight much less at 40 than I did at 23.
The reason that people gain weight as they get older is they eat the same as the metabolism
slows down.No one wants to hear "eat less".

To not get fat. Gaining the national average of 1 lb./year over 30 or 40 years is 30 or 40 lbs.
I'd rather weight the same at 60 as I did at 20. So far I'm doing it, by eating less. I think my
quality of life, in the long run, will be better for
it.
