  1. went running on the road encompassing central park (nyc) today at 3 am.
about 3 miles into my 2 cop cars come from behind, lights flashing,
and get on both sides of me. their windows come down...and i and the
cops are maintaining a 7:30 pace. one cop says, "my man...you can't be
here now, it's trespassing after 1am". i said, "no [censored]?" cop
says...."yeah"..."we'd normally let you go but there are too many cops
out here in the park with this Christo project under construction".
"Our bosses are out here so we can't look the other way"....i said, "no
problem...next exit out is about a mile and half ahead....i'll head out
    onto madison avenue"...cop said, "ok".

both cop cars with gumballs fully flashing dropped about 30' behind me
and proceeded to escort me for a mile and a half as i ran in the middle
of the road. wow...now this was really cool...i cranked up to a 6:40
pace as it was very thrilling to be escorted by police cars, lights
flashing at night for a mile and a half in central park, felt like i
    was winning a marathon.

i exited, waved off the cops...and ran down madison back home. the
encounter will my top 5 most thrilling moments in running 🙂

A black man running in the dark, in the park, and no hub caps under his
arm? I would have assumed a drug dealer and done a cavity search. I'm
sending a note to the mayor about their [censored] poor security. 😉

First off it's truly sad that this would be a highlight of your day, nevermind
life. Second, the fact you had no clothes on had a lot to do with them chasing
you. Third, they only let you go because they didn't want to touch a naked,
    bald, fat, middle-aged, loser.

Was about to write *exactly* the same thing. My god, if my most memorable
running moments included that 'experience' I'd give myself one of 'Jenn's
    specials' as a punishment.

That's a good one! I once had a police escort while running in Atlanta.
This was about 10:00 PM. Apparently the police felt it was unsafe for a
female to be out running at that time of night. They may be correct,
but I carry pepper spray and I'm willing to take my chances. I've had
no encounters other than boys/men yelling at me from their cars. After
the police questioned what I was doing (as if it were not obvious),
they followed me for 2 miles until I got home. But no lights flashing
    for me.

Perhaps they liked the view from behind...

One of the guys in my team was beaten up by a gang of hooligans in prospect
park. It's not like he was an easy target either -- he runs pretty quickly
(1:12 half-marathoner). You're lucky you met the cops instead.

Yeah, but 1:12 is "only" a 5:30 pace.
    That's not always very helpful.
If you have a 250lb hooligan who can sprint
40 yards in 4.5 seconds as your 1:12 guy
    passes by, then ....

Just curious, what time was he running?

  11. That TV set you were running with, maybe why they were behind you.

  12. Nevermind the pace, WTF is a hooligan?

It's *usually* fairly helpful, because you're usually out the way before
anyone gets a chance to stop you. If it came down to a foot race for survival,
he would have easily won. Don't forget, the 250lb hooligan has a standing
start against someone with a moving start, and also has to gain some ground.
The point is that it pretty much takes a planned ambush (which this was) to
pin down a guy that fast.

The problem is, these guys were succesful in obstructing him enough that he
stopped. He didn't realise it was an ambush until too late. In hindsight,
I suppose it's probably better not to stop for anyone.

You don't think "hot pink" tights over his Siderman costume begged "beat me
    senseless, please?" ?

  15. That's funny, because as it's written, it doesn't come across as
thrilling, cool, or even mentionable. I could be jaded,
though.........when you've been chased by the snoids as many times as I
have, if it doesn't end with multiple police dog bites, or stick time,
it's just not worth bringing up. On a related note, if punching a
police dog that happens to be chewing on your neck can bring an "assault
on a police officer" charge, then why is this same "officer" allowed to
take dumps on the grass, when no one else is allowed to? I'm sorry,
this was about you..............please go on.

  16. Okay let me share this story... back in the mid-seventies when the
"running craze" was beginning... I went out running one weekend after
mid-night at a local high school track.
Police shined their lights and called me over.

Shaking their heads , asking what the hell I was doing. I told them I
was was running/exercising. They were in disbelief... now days
occasionally I go down to the track late and it is not uncommon to see
other runners. Also the town installed flood lights for late night
people out on the track. It's great!

  17. That pepper spray ain't going to do a dam thing kid except make
somebody very angry. It must be your looks that's been saving you.
