A man who allegedly robbed a renowned Victorian cartoonist has been caught, thanks to a detailed caricature drawn by his victim.

Police said the cartoonist, Bill 'Weg' Green, who is famous for his drawings of AFL Grand Final posters, offered to draw a picture of the robber when police arrived at his home in Melbourne's east.

Mr Green, 82, had been confronted by the robber in the carport of his Heathmont home on Saturday morning, police said.

The robber tried to assault Mr Green, then stole a red racing bicycle from the rear shed. As the man rode away the cartoonist watched and then reported the incident.

When police arrived, Mr Green offered to draw a picture of the alleged thief. Afterwards, police took the drawing to other officers who had arrested a man for a theft nearby.

"Holding up the cartoon, both members were amazed to find it was the spitting image of the arrested man in the back of the divisional van," Senior Constable Michael Henry said.

A 34-year-old Boronia man was interviewed in relation to burglary, theft and unlawful assault and will face court at a later date.

Mr Green and his red racing bicycle.. vivid colour references, reminds me of Noddy animations. And I wonder.. are red racing bicycles more special than other coloured racing bicycles, or non-racing bicycles? 😕

I've seen those special red-racing giants in action at Kew Blvd 😉 Poor Loonybike was overwhelmed and went home to sulk, being out-specialed by non-euro red machines. :p 😄 Maybe that's her problem - she can't decide what colour she really is or wants to be (typical gemini!! 😄 )

Nope, but then we have a few originals {:-).

In defence of Phil, he has been doing this for over 35 years, which can
make it hard to be fresh all the time.

I still haven't found anyone else who can match him for bicycle cartoons.

*Everybody* knows that red makes everything go faster! Like when I was
in the dive shop buying my first lot of gear: "Do you sell red masks? I
want to be able to dive faster." Tongue firmly in cheek, and the lady
doing the selling knew it; she told me of a sales guy at a Honda car lot
that said that red cars go faster ... and meant it.

She bought her car somewhere else.
