I guess it's all what you're into. I find the sprinting to be boring
but the KOM to be quite intriguing. Maybe because I'm powerful in
short distances but drag on climbs. It's impressive.

Anyhow, if all we had was yellow and everyone else it would take away
something from the tour.

Plus, how can you not be impressed with a guy who's happy to wear a
white jersey with big red polka dots on it?

Back when I raced, I woulda done that if I could. But I couldn't.

The other thing is, these little competitions are sorta needed to give
the competition some spice before the real thing starts, in the
mountains. It is 3 weeks long.

fair enough, but i prefer watching good riding designed to win races
and stages (ie. what erik dekker does) to showboat stuff.

If by 'do something' you mean they can pull better guys along and carry
water, OK. Otherwise, you might want to look at the palmares for ten or
twenty pro riders chosen at random. A lot of pros really don't win anything
much at all; even if you look down the TdF start list, which is basically
the top end of the pro peloton, you'll find guys with not much by way of
wins.

Actually, no.

Most teams (not all) would've liked to have a rider in the break.
Publicity and all that.

There's a handful of riders who are strong enough and smart enough to
consistently get in ones that stay out in front most of the day and get
the TV coverage.

That dumbass Voeckler is one of them. He earns his money.

But not out of disdain for the classification. A lot more want to win what
Voeckler won yesterday. Some can't go with the break because they have team
obligations. And escaping in the tour is not just a matter of saying "Ok,
let's go" and leaving. It takes skill to recognize what break will make it
for a longer time and actually being with it.

Funny you should mention Erik Dekker. So many times I saw him being
interviewed after a race, when he had to admit that "they just didn't let
him go", meaning that he failed to be in the right break. Hats off to
Voeckler for having the pressure on him to do this on this particular day
and then actually achieving that goal. The way he went over Canada was also
impressive.
