What is truly amazing is that for a 41 lb bike, shipping is $39.00.
But if you look at the "ebay is my job" people, they charge upwards of
$70 to ship a FRAME.

Yeah I noticed the fairly low shipping price too. But what caught my eye,
why I looked at this listing in the first place, was that it was listed as a
2005 model with a starting bid of $159 I am always looking for a deal. But
when I looked at the description and the photos and then saw the weight!!! I
don't care what the price is this thing is NO deal. I can find bikes of this
quality on the side of the road every garbage day!

Looks like a knock-off of a late-70s Columbia/Huffy, except without
the same attention to detail. At ten percent of the asking price, the
shipping would still make it unattractive.

Even if the box accounts for 8 pounds, it's still too darn heavy.

Looking at the kit on it, I see old-style brake levers with center
pulls, a no-name rear der whose layout looks distressingly familiar
(and not at all inviting), side-pull calipers that would be right at
home on a Roadmaster, 32/630 (alias 27 x 1 1/4) tires, no QR front or
rear, a saddle clamp that's likely to have insta-tilt issues on the
first bump, and I'm pretty sure those are cottered cranks; the
description says the cranks are "steel".

I revise my estimate. It's a copy of a late *60s* mass-market tourer.

impression that the bike is 41 pounds, but notice that the
rest of it mentions not only the box but also a crate.

I expect that there's a hefty wooden frame around a
cardboard box.

A steel-frame touring bike won't be down around 17 pounds,
but it's just as unlikely to be over 30 pounds. The tubes
don't look wildly oversize, and nothing else looks
exceptional.

A Fury Roadmaster from Walmart with a triple and 5 rear
gears, 2-inch wide monster-knobby tires, and a far heftier
steel frame comes in just a cardboard box (no crate) with an
advertised shipping weight of 40.0 pounds:

It's only a 54cm frame, so unless the tube walls are
amazingly thick, it just isn't likely to be as ponderous as
the description leads us to think. My 1998 Schwinn LeTour
steel-frame has a lighter crank, but also a seat bag and
tool bag with a spare tire, four spare tubes, some parts,
and some tools--and it weighs about 25 pounds.

Same company as the other bike, same sort of odd woring.

I suspect "net weight" means bike plus box plus crating. A
similarly shaped steel Fury Roadmaster is only about 32
pounds.
