Bearings as smooth as a smooth thing, no noticeable play in freehub - hub interface. However, the cassette seems to be able to rock back and forth a fair bit, no matter how tight the lock ring, and repeating the experiment with a brand-new cassette seems to indicate either:

Anyway, it doesn't appear to be fatal, so I suppose I shall have to put up with it until such time as I can be arsed to get a new body.
Depending on what your bike shop charges you for spares it might be worth buying a whole hub instead of just the freehub. You get the freehub and a complete service kit for the bearings with all balls, cones and seals. The hub shell is very useful as a paper weight also.
