S'funny you should mention it but.....

A few days ago, at lunchtime, I thought I would treat myself to an
outdoors mag. I've not had one for ages - probably 4 or 5 years - so
I went to WH Smiths and bought Trail. I bought this magazine quite
deliberately because PeeWiglet had said, on urw, that there was
something about the Scottish coast to coast walk that she did[1]. I
flicked through the pages but couldn't see anything, but bought it and
took it back to the car to read.

I went all through the mag and STILL couldn't find ANY mention of the
walk.

Later that day, it struck me ........ the reason that there was
nothing in Trail was because it was the (wait for it......) *TGO*
Challenge. Oh bugger, £3.40 and I bought the wrong mag!

So, next day, I went back to Smiths and bought TGO ..... and got a
free Daily Telegraph and 40p of the mag cover price. I've still not
found anything about the TGO Challenge but have confirmed my previous
view that Trail is a more "fun" read and is my preferred outdoors mag
but neither of them are worth buying regularly..... but I'm looking
forward to drooling over all the kit adverts this weekend!

completely ignore the existance of Nuttalls Book 1. Perhaps they have
issues with the Nuttalls or vice-versa or just tried to prevent any

I gave up on Trail years back when it degenerated into the Tryfan and
Northn Snowdonia monthly. If it's branching out again I may be interested.

I haven't bought either for years, but when I did, I noticed the same thing - both would often have
strikingly similar major features in the same month. Trail are/were often accused of being obsessed

Reading between the lines, this did seem to be the case. The Nuttalls wrote articles for TGO which
didn't help, but I think it goes deeper than that. In one issue Trail erroneously stated that
Castell y Gwynt was a separate 2000er, and I spoke with John Nuttall about it and sent him the
offending article. He contacted Trail but didn't get a reply.

I still don't think either is worth a regular buy, I occasionally flick through them in WHS and I
see nothing to change my mind. Better to combine all Chris Townsend's articles into a single mag
once each year - I'd buy that.

From my occasional browse in Smith's perspective, if you're into
the Lake District, the Lake District, the Lake District, the Lake
District, the Lake District, the Lake District or possibly the Lake
District then it might just have something for you! ;-)

I thought that was why there were Starbucks branches in Borders or similar,
reading lots of expensive mags & coffee table books!......often there are
nice comfy sofa without buying coffee to!!

My mag views........

Trail - bit of a dull mag'. It tried very hard about 18 months back to
shake off its red sock image by introducing a 'mountaineering' section
-
good little articles and solid advice but it seems to have withered
away.

I had a peek at this months Via Ferrata article and it was pathetic - 2
pages of absolute pap.

I also got into an email debate with the tech' ed a few months ago and
he got a bit snotty with me (maybe it was just me!) which put me off of
the whole thing.

An even worse mag is High Mountain Sports - same dull old format year
after year and a lot of focus on bouldering/climbing walls - not really
high mountain sports in my view (although there are obvious parallels).

High disappeared early this year, to be replaced by Climb, which as the
name suggests only covers technical climbing. All the hillwalking,
scrambling, ski touring and general stuff had been dropped.

Down to just TAC now that the world is divided between danglers and
bumblies..

Us do a bit of everything types have fallen through the gap, althoug
Trail to be fair, does venture into easier climbing , cannot stand
reading it though, a style thing.

Um.... are you sure I said something about it recently? I can't
remember mentioning it! Then again, these days I have a memory like a
sieve...

I think I said a while ago (couple of months) that if you were really
interested in the TGO Challenge then you should get the October issue
of TGO for an entry form (and it comes out in September - this time
next month). That could have been it, perhaps?

Sounds good. Tranmere Rovers have agreed to play on the Friday night
(just for me) so I could be there v v late on Friday or early-ish on
Saturday.
