mIRC is a much more reliable connection. However I think it scares some folks. It's also shareware which *should* be registered and takes a bit of getting used to.
But I find the web interface much more cumbersome.

Yeah, I use mIRC personally, but a lot of folks are terrified of it. I am going to teach sf to use it when I see her in a week or so...but it is hard to talk someone through it online.
I am just glad folks are finding us, and we are having such fun chats lately! I don't really care how they get there....if they can use mIRC and can find it easy enough to use, then more power to them!

There are a lot of security issues using mIRC on a PC. I have both PC and Mac. At one time I had mIRC on a PC for about 3 weeks. The problem with the chats is there are cliques so some just sit there not really wanting to but in and for the most part the better part of chats are saying hi and goodbye. Nothings really changed. I've checked out the rec.food.cooking chat using the java but it won't be something I do with any regularity. Don't get me wrong. It's nice if you like that sort of thing. I would never install mIRC on either computer though.

I tried the posted URL but get a blank screen that is supposedly connected but nothing happens and there are no buttons or commands to ececute anything, pluse the first time i tried messing with my Java controlls i ended up messing up my browser and had to reload it.
I have access to IRC software but wonder if that is the same as mIRC? --- JL

Oh dear. I'm one of the in crowd when it comes to talking about cooking not so much so when talking about other things. I'm a relative newbie here compared to many of you who have talked with each other for quite some time and some of you have even met in real life so you know each other better. I'm not by nature into small talk and really not much of a talker especially around people I don't know. So the chat isn't really comfortable for me yet.

There aren't cliques in the channel if you're talking about outsiders being unwelcome. New people are often BEGGED to say something. If you mean that the cliques are composed of the people who talk the most, they're not in a clique. They just like to talk a lot! Speak, and ye shall be heard.

Heck, just speak up! There are no cliques. I've been on the chat room since Damsel and Crash started it on Mirc, even though I'm an infrequent visitor many times. It's a wonder I'm not told to be quiet when I'm on there, since I prattle on (quiet, chorus).
Some people naturally like to listen and ponder - it's your choice to do what you want but, again, there are no cliques, so just jump in.
There are a lot of security issues using mIRC on a PC.
what security vulnerablities are you referring to? hell, a poorly patched windows machine has more security vulerablities than you could shake a stick at. mirc is the least of your worries. especially when there's only only like 20 people on the entire network

mirc is not the only irc client in the world. there are tons of suitable windows clients. xchat makes a windows port of their client. there's a mac based client called snak that you could use as well. ('course you'll have to pay for it.) don't worry so much! come and play 🙂
