  1. Hi,

I like to go Cycling to keep fit - I usually do 30 Miles, 3 times a week. I
take a couple of 1 litre bottles of week blackcurrent to drink during my
    ride.
However for the rest of the day after exercise I feel thirsty - even though
I drink plenty of water after I end up having to go to the loo and feel
    thirsty again.

    Anyone else experience this ?

Any recommendations on what I should drink to fullly replenish myself ?

    TIA

    Marko

  2. Are you loosing lots of weight? Maybe it's worth having your doctor
check your blood sugar levels (diabetes).

No, I had a medical a couple of months ago and was tested for diabetes -
fortunately I am as fit as a fiddle.
I mentioned that I remianed thirsty after exercise but he didn't seem
    concerned.

Even if it's weak, the blackcurrent might be the problem -- maybe too much
of a directic, and it's very moreish anyway.

    I have with blackcurrent.

Plain water (but don't overdo it) and/or a proper isotonic drink, or make
your home-made drinks even weaker (try orange).

And do a bit of reading up on diabetes via the net to see if you have any
    other symptoms.

    I mean diuretic.

Have you tried a 50/50 mix of water and fruit juice? For some reason
orange doesn't work well, but apple or grape are fine.

That's interesting, I will swap to just water and see how I get on, when I
get back from Cycling I continue to drink Blackcurrent so maybe that is
    exacerbating the problem.

I never use isotonic drinks as they are soo sweet, maybe I should try one to
if it has a good effect.

    Thanks for you help

I find that I need to drink plenty before, during and after the ride,
and when not riding as well. I need to drink several litres of water
a day. Do you drink a lot of tea & coffee? Cutting down on that can
help. And I drink only water on the bike.

I find that thirsts that don't go away when you drink actually turn out to
be hunger. It won't do any harm to try eating something, anyway.

That's interesting - I recently read about someone confusing that the
other way around, enough that I've tried drinking when hungry. Turns
out sometimes I mixed it up too.

  12. I wonder if you're short of those things lost during exercise, that help
    you to retain water.

Are you eating enough, soon enough after exercise?

When you exercise, you use up glycogen and there is a lot of water bound
to glycogen. You will lose that water in your urine. Until you rebuild
that glycogen, water poured in might run straight out.

Likewise, if you lose much salt through sweating you might have problems.

There is probably no need to eat/drink anything special; a good meal has
plenty of salt and a pudding will help replace the glycogen...

If you have access to accurate weighing scales, you can assess your
fluid balance fairly well. Weight gain in the week following prolonged
exercise would suggest injury and excessive effort.

I'd try drinking water, rather than blackcurrent. Also avoid (or at
least moderate your intake of) caffeine and alcohol... at least to
find out if it makes any difference.

The other thing is to drink water *before* you feel thirsty. If you
know you've got a exercise session coming up make sure you have plenty
    of water well before hand.

Plain water (but don't overdo it) and/or a proper isotonic drink, or
make your home-made drinks even weaker (try orange).

I never use isotonic drinks as they are soo sweet, maybe I should try
one to if it has a good effect.

H'mmm... the only isotonic drink I've tried was also a little too sweet,
and had artificial sweetener in. Can anyone recommend a brand which
    doesn't?.

50-50 fruit juice and water -- with a pinch of salt if you are sweating
    hard.

I prefer just water on the bike and OJ+water at the end (or a nice cup of
    tea!!).

Isotonic may have a scientific background -- but its largely been highjacked
    by marketing hype.

Why is it so hard to get any chilled drink in this country that is not
    one of:

    1. Disgustingly sweet
    2. Alcoholic
    3. Outrageously overpriced water

There's a time and a place for the above, but it's not when quenching
a thirst after cycling into town.

This is one thing I really miss about Italy: there are some soft
drinks[1,2] and bottled waters[2] that are actually pleasant to drink.

[1] Orange or lemon flavours, far less sweet and more refreshing than
    anything here.
[2] Neither still and dead nor grossly gassy, but slightly effervescent.

Lilt is the right concentration and not necessarily too sweet. Useful to
    know when on the move.

The pubs are full of folk who get so confused over this that they end
up drinking several pints *and* eating a large curry.

  20. If I'm in a pub I always make a point of drinking several extra pints
of beer in anticipation of being thirsty later on.

    cheers
