How do you find it on rough, rocky terrain (i.e. large rocky step downs), some reviews indicate the bike is more suited to flatter terrain on which you can really get some speed up.

It's done well on every type of terrain I have ridden it on (rocky and sandy washouts and flat).

Depending on what it's selling for, you typically get a lot of value for the money. Great entry-level through intermediate bike for most riding conditions. But I think the same about most Marins, too, so who knows?
Thinking about this Specialized Rockhopper Pro 2007.

I got restarted into MTBing with a Hardrock, and as that coped with North Wales trails I'm sure the RockHopper will be even better. Specialized bikes tend to give you a lot of value for money, and always do well in magazine reviews.

On the rare occasions I ride with The Freak, I make sure to wear my garish Fisher team jersey, which matches the paint job on my garish Fisher uber-light aluminum hardtail frame. ;-)
