I recent bought a Thermarest Prolite 3 Regular length. It's nice and light (but still heavier than my Ridgerest), but is not as enthusiastic about self-inflating as my Regular Thermarest. Basically, it'll inflate to about 1.5cm and I have to finish it off with a few blows. Anyone else have this experience?

yup, ditto, unless you leave it for ages; too much 'space' you see, that's where it gets it lightness from... too (sic.) much space and not enough stuff to loft it.

Got he same TR and first few times it needed some encouragement. After that I left if unrolled at home and now it seems to have learnt what inflated actually means.
I always give it a few extra blows anyway to get a firmer platform and stop me sinking into it too much. (that may be a weight issue on my part though !)

As far as my old style Ultralite goes "self inflating" is overoptimistic to say the least.

I thought this was the way with all Thermarests?
I have an Ultralite 3/4 and always have to give it a couple of extra puffs. I don't see it as a bad point - it means that I can decide how firm I want it.
Judith PS I'm sure this post has plenty of room for double-entendre but, being entirely sweet and innocent, I can't see how.

Yes, and with most other lightweight self-inflating mats I've tried. The Prolite doesn't need as many breaths as some. Thicker, heavier mats do seem to self-inflate better.
My old Therm-A-Rest Ultralite has always needed a few breaths too.

Judith went into a bar and asked for a double entendre so the barman gave her one.

My ultralight gets left for about half an hour whilst I pfaff about and then a few lungfulls to make it nice and firm. It is stored with the valve open behind the sofa.

He he he. If you hadn't mentioned it nobody would have set off on that train of thought, naughty girl!
PS I noticed a post at about 12.30 then this one at 18.20, does this mean you've been to TR? For once we snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat. -- Phil Cook looking north over the park to the "Westminster Gasworks"

Yes, we were away to Wrexham which is only 30 miles away, so I made a last minute decision to go. (I had a nightmare about Rovers, last night, so took that as an omen.)
We won ...... 5 - 1. Yes, FIVE - ONE! (I still feel like I must have dreamt it, but it's been on the TV, so must be true!)
We've opened up a healthy gap from you now. Well, healthy for the time being!

Better not mention I'm a Hull City fan then had I? Whoops...

I went to the Hull v Tranmere game just before Xmas and saw you nasty Hull people break both of our goalkeepers .....and you still only managed to put six into an empty goal! (Btw, our stand-in goalie on that day scored today and was, IMO, man of the match. He's not as bad as you'd think if you'd only seen him at that game!)

Yes we were a bit naughty that day, but if its any consolation, I felt a deal of symapthy that day for Tranmere... It was embarrassing. Which stand-in? The last one? Theo was a great favourite in this city and we knew he was a good player on his day.

Yes, I meant Theo. I forgot you'd have remembered his name, since he used to play there. I couldn't blame Hull for trying to score goals .... I mean, that's what you're meant to do. If only someone had told Theo that the goalie is allowed to use his hands!

yeah my ultralite 3/4 needs some encouragement. I also found them to be useless unless you have the really thick 6" deep ones. if you lay on your back its ok, as they float you like a matteress, but if you lay on yout sides, the ultalite version and the newer prolite 3, they are so thin you touch through unless you overinflate them to bursting point. i get better sleep on a blue foam mat than on the ultralite + prolite.
if you can manage to sleep on your back, they are nice tho, if heavy...

I generally sleep on my side, and while my Ultralite certainly isn't as comfy as my Standard T-rest, I do find it okay and still quite a bit better than an Expedition Karrimat. I take the Ulltralite if space and/or weight is an issue and sleep okay, take the Standard if the extra bulk and weight isn't an issue and sleep better (unless it's on a hill, as it predates the non-slide coating!).

As a long-time lurker, and partner of a regular contributor I crave an indulgence to ask a slightly off topic question.
I am thinking of buying a T-R Z-Lite (formerly Z-Rest) and would be grateful for any comments about this item. Sorry to but(t)(?) into your thread but I really do need some information. In the past I have used, air-beds, Karrimat, Thermarest self-inflators, aand Ridge_rest, but in the interests of light-weight I want to achieve an optimum. Many Thanks.
