Pootling around the lanes of Norfolk yesterday, going over to check out the boarding cattery fro the Unfit Family's felines, a kestrel landed in the hedge at the side of the road and remained there as I cycled by, its head swivelled as I cycled by, so it was watching me the entire time. Lovely bird up close. Then today I passed a field of black-faced sheep - several of which were lined up at the gate, as I cycled by and they too stared intently as I went by. Obviously the sight of fatbirdonabike intrigued them ;-)

They were probably contemplating what sort of food you might have in your packpack. The Soay sheep where I was working last week come and stand on my feet to sniff what I'm eating. They definitely like Indonesian spicy crackers, but turn their noses up at tuna salad.

I found the sheep on top of Y'Garn in Snowdonia like Mars bars.

As my regular daily run is out of town I see a lot of wildlife on my travels. I've noticed that many creatures are less wary of a cyclist than they are of a human on foot.....

One can fully appreciate the fascination.. :-) It's a topic that, in general, simply doesn't get enough serious research IMHO...... ;-)

I tend to find mars bars in my rucksack but have never found a sheep

You approach very quickly for something so quiet, and very quietly for something so quick. On one evening's ride some years ago I was actually in collision with a roe buck - we didn't see one another until too late, and he totally misjudged my speed and bounded out to hit me approximately mid-thigh. I stayed upright and he charged off into the trees so was presumably OK... On solo night rides off road I've had hares freeze in the light from my Lumis and stay frozen while I passed within a yard of them. Only Thursday I passed two buzzards within six feet. You do often get amazingly close to wildlife on a bike.
