After an entire summer of fine-tuning my bike, I am finally finished with my work, save for the last
niggling problem, the front wheel just doesn't feel or sound 'right'. With the bike upside down,
when I spin the wheel by hand, I can feel what to me is excessive vibration, where I am expecting it
to be quiet and smooth. I feel the effects of this when riding as well. I've tried removing the
quick release lever and reinserting the wheel on the forks in slightly different ways, but that
doesn't solve the problem. The wheel itself is in excellent condition, and has not been heavily used
(aluminum rim, Shimano Shimano FH-RM40 (VIAM) hub, 700 x 38 tire). The trueness is pretty good, so I
don't think the spokes need adjusting, and the wheel does spin freely on its hub (although not
"super freely"😉. What might the source of the problem be? I can only imagine that the hub might need
some fine tuning or regreasing, but I don't know if I can disassemble these modern hubs (and
properly reassemble them), or how to go about doing it, or whether it is necessary. Any expert
advice on this?

Sounds like your cones need greasing, and perhaps new bearings. You'll need a pair of cone spanners
(quite cheap).I usually find that it takes several attempts to tighten them up correctly - it's a bit fiddly to
avoid any movement of the axle and inner spanner whilst tightening the outer nut.A bientot Paul

advice on this?I've had similar Shimano hubs come from the factory with an over-tight bearing adjustment. This gives a rough feeling when the axle is rotated that will be made worse when you correctly tighten the qr lever. Sure, a complete overhaul may be necessary, but if you're lucky, an adjustment will do it. It contains information you'll need if you decide to do any work on the bearings of your hubs. It is not a hard job, but you will need some special tools that are inexpensive and worth getting.Good luck

necessary. Any expert advice on this?Are you sure it's the wheel and not the fork that's vibrating? In my experience, a loose headset is
more noticeable when riding than a loosely-adjusted hub.
