Are we giving too much credit to the hero who fixes a front derailleur on the fly during a group ride, or are they just covering up for their own lack of preparation?
Lets be real, a quick fix is great and all, but shouldnt we be focusing on why the derailleur was malfunctioning in the first place? Was it a result of poor maintenance, incorrect installation, or just plain ignorance of how to properly set up a bike?
Ive seen too many times where someone saves the day with a quick fix, only to have the same issue pop up again a few miles down the road. Meanwhile, the rest of the group is left waiting and wondering why were stuck dealing with someone elses mechanical issues.
Shouldnt we be holding riders to a higher standard of bike maintenance and preparation, rather than just praising them for being able to MacGyver a fix on the fly? Or am I just being too harsh, and a quick fix is really all that matters?
