Hey Hobbes! What if you strapped your feet down in orbit and then lifted. What kind of work out do you get (measured by accelerometer I assume) for starting a mass in motion...then canceling that motion. Especially if you're attempting to stop it in as little space as possible, i.e., explosive at the start and controlled at the finish. Hmmm...
I took part in the testing of the ISS "linear range of motion fitness gadget" at Rice U in 1991. That might be more useful.

But then you would have no resistance. You could "bench" 1000 lbs for reps but to what end? I guess it would look pretty cool but would not do much for strength or LBM.

If you weren't willing to take infinite time, you'd have some resistance. The calculation is pretty easy. With a 1' range of motion, getting the bar to the end in 1/4 second (moving at full speed, no stopping, so this isn't really a good idea) requires force equal to the weight.

Of course you would have to then yank it back as you just added the momentum to that mass you just pushed on. Might be sort of an explosive bench back row type action. Hmmm
