The forum seems a little sparse on material for this race, maybe because of the races location. There's a thread on tire width but not much more. I hope folks feel free to add their own experiences, tips, general comments, etc.
A little background: My racing age is 45, currently a Cat4 and got back into racing a couple years ago after a long layoff. I've been riding and racing on and off for awhile. I have a slew of 2nd places finishes over 5 seasons of accumulated racing, including a 2nd place at Bear Mountain when I was 15 years old racing in the Men's Public race, but never took the gold. I'm not expecting a win at Battenkill by any means. A top 20 finish is my goal for a first try, but in reality from what I do know about the race I am going to be happy finishing in one piece. I'm small potatoes and I know some readers are far beyond my ability.
I've been off the bike since a bad injury right before last years Tour of the Catskills in August, getting in maybe 2 rides a week if lucky so much of the fitness I've accumulated has dwindled, and in addition I have spend a good portion of that time enjoying considerable amounts of Asahi.
3 months to go and I've just started my "official" training plan. I work pretty long hours so unfortunately whatever form I happen upon will be managed in 12-13 hours/week.
I'll be riding my faithfull Aluminum Cinelli, running alloy rims, either 25c Conti GP's or their 4-season's, tipping the scales at 18lbs. I'm contemplating the 4-seasons as I don't have a second set of wheels for wheel support and a flat would probably kill any chances of a good showing. The only point of contemplation is whether to run with a 12-25 or a 12-27 cassette driven by a 39t chainring. One Cat4 who finished last year indicated if you need the 27 you probably won't make the first selection. I've never really needed granny gears, at my Bear Mountain 2nd place, I ran a 14-18 straight block 5 speed driven by a 42T small chainring. How the eff I managed that I have no idea. But that was the 80's when everyone ran tiny freewheels.
It'll be a new experience for me as I've usually just done a bunch of riding staring in early spring and raced myself into shape for the end of season stuff. This will be the first time targeting an early season race.
IMPORTANT: Cat4 filled up within a day or so of registration opening! If this is a race someone wants they gotta get inline quick.
