  1. yesterday the doctors basicly told me the ride is over. I was riding at
the expert level for seven years when i developed a pilonidal cyst in
my saddle area. I have been to 7 doctors in 3 years. To make a long
story short everything has been tryd. I am begging you guys, I am
incapable of describing how desperate I am to get back on my bike. i am
searching for a doctor that cares and or a surgen that is capable of
thinking out side of the box. or any ideas that will get me back on my
    bike.
the doctors recomended i take up rowing or jogging, this is not an
option for me as i have been riding seriously years and i am unwilling
and incapable of throughing away everything i have worked and traind so
    hard for.
also if anybody can think of another group that i could try i would be
    greatfull.

Am I correct in ASSuming this is something along the lines of a really
    bad hemaroid?

See what breaking one's collar does.....makes one a fish for trols.....but
    I'm bored

Nope. Not actually a cyst but usually an abscess consisting of, but not
always, a hair ball and puss under the skin....

OK, I had to look it up but there's a wealth of useless info on the
net.....and accordingly, it doesn't seem as bad as a bad, dangling hemaroid.
Seems to me some time off the bike and some searching on the web for types
of treatment may be in order. There's way more than one web site dedicated
    to this.....

Kathleen posted about something pretty darned similar (butt in much nicer
environs, no doubt) years ago; perhaps she'll see this and comment.

Meanwhile, contact the best dermatologist or school in your area and
    ask/demand/beg for effective treatment.

    Good luck.

I'd cut the thing out myself if I were in your situation. No pussball is
gonna stop me from riding, except temporarily.

(Currently trying to shake free of a saddlesore myself, and not saying
    that's what you SHOULD do.)

  13. Pete,
the over payd uncaring quacks say that the cyst is sarounded by scar
tissue and working on it any more will cause more problims than i
already have. on the bright side...... they sugjested that i take up
golf or jogging. it took every ounce of self controle i have in my
whole body to (not) choke the life out of the quack right there on the
spot. Why is it that ONLY mountain bikers are capable of understanding
what it means to ride at the expert level? what does a guy have to say
to the quacks to make them even come close to comprehending the gravity
of my situatation? if they can do lazer surgery on eyeballs why in
Gods name can't they remove a little scar tissue?
i am outraged. I see guys riding out there all the time with one leg
or one arm poor vision and all sorts of injurys. and there is no
possable way to ride with a golf ball sized 'thing' right where you
sit. Darsh said it best when he said the pain is like its from another
world ...... god i wish i could contact him ....

This isn't going to make you feel any better... but I'd mortgage my house to be
    able to run.

To me, running was the best-feeling exercise in the world. I suspect that men
were evolved to sneak up on something big, stick a spear in it, sprint like
hell, and then jog for 2-3 hours following it until it died.

If it's over, it's *over*.... I'd take up trail running - or, if I were
acrobatically inclined, something like those Slavic guys were doing in that
video link that somebody posted a week or so ago.

Medicine moves on and some docs are better than others. While I was getting
into running, I'd keep looking - but I definitely wouldn't hook up with the
first guy that says he'll do the op... who knows, maybe his ex-wife got a big
judgment against him and he needs the money...

    snip

I had one for years-- it was literally a pain in the ass. I finally had had
enough and went to my doctor who referred me to a surgeon. The surgeon,
suprise, suggested surgery. He put me on antibiotics for the two weeks
leading up to the surgery-- to knock down the puss/infection. Then he did
the procedure on me as an out patient at my local hospital. No big deal
except my ass cheeks were sewn together for two weeks while it healed.

It is now four years later and I have no trouble with it other than the scar
is a bit thick and lumpy and I can feel it when I lay certain ways.

    Steve

  16. ok, i'll take it!
    who's the surgeon, what hospital?
i found out a lot of shtuf in the last week. it's mind blowing that
my 'doctors' have never heard of pilonidal excision surgeries. as it
turns out, there are sevral options that exist that the quacks have
never even heard of i'm going to go for the technique of removing the
pits and leaving the deep tissue (hopfuly learning from darse) and
there is also a thing call marsupialization that sounds interesting.
i dont know and i dont care about what anybody says. i'll be back on
my bike or i'll die trying.
I am a Mountain Biker and no damn quack is sealing My fate. i'm glad
the nit wit sugjested jogging or golf ..... or whatever, there dumbness
made me mad enough to do there job for them. and i hope and pray
'people' continue to recomend jogging...... jogging *rolls eyes*

marsupialization... do they take out the cyst and put on a tail? J/K.....
amazing what you can find out on your own. Some docs get really locked into
    thier little box. good luck.

This seems to be not-so-uncommon complaint with the pro roadie set.
    http://www.velonews.com/race/tour2002/articles/2791.0.html
In fact, if you go to velonews.com and type 'cyst' in the search box, a
couple pages worth of links come up. You may find something there.
Not to be harsh, and this is a cycling group, but, you know, stuff
happens. Larry Bird had to stop playing basketball because of back
problems. Magic quit because of AIDS. Your injury is unfortunate, but
it sounds like you're in good shape otherwise. I'd be seriously bummed
(no pun intended) if I had to stop riding, but, you know, life goes on.
