  1. So, two weeks in a row I've had a rib put back in place. This
morning, I had two ribs put back in place. But, the bright side is we
(my chiro and I) think we know what is causing it. Bench Pressing!
I've been going pretty heavy lately and when I fight to get that last
rep, sometimes I'll torque to my right side because my right side is
weaker than my left. Plus, I arch quite a bit.

I knocked my ribs out (I think) while benching Monday. I didn't feel
it until Tuesday morning. So Wednesday, instead of going light in the
squat or not squatting at all, I did 5 sets of 5 ATG with no belt at
300 figuring I couldn't make things any worse. It hardly bothered me
and some of the exercises Dr. Clary gave me to do seemed to take care
of the problem on Thurday. I was surprised to find TWO ribs out of
    place this morning.

So, Fred asks me about my foot placement during the bench thinking
it's a slight technique flaw causing it. That's when I remind him
that my right side is weaker than my left in the bench and tell him
about torquing to my right lately. The light bulb goes off above both
    our heads.

So I'm thinking that maybe I should start benching more frequently but
going much lighter. Perhaps like a sheiko routine. Anyone got any
    input?

Go ahead and crunch those ribs. You've got spares.

Joun, I am going to make a comment that may not be appropriate. Just to
mention something to you and/or your chiro that may (or not) help.

I had a person I was working with who developed some real problems with
benching. We tried tweaking the bench press every way possible to work
around it. What I ended up doing was to make anarrower bench with aslight
hump. It was about five inches wide with about a two inch slight hump right
in the middle of his thorax area.

By isolating this area and stabilizing himself around the narrow bench, it
did the trick. A highly individual solution. And he wasn't a powerlifter
either. But it worked for him.

And it would probably not be practical for you either. But we kept at it
    until we found a solution.

Good luck. You need to stabilize the right side somehow. Maybe a footblock
    or something.

Sounds right to me, John. Although I don't practice bench pressing,
it's been my experience that for the pressing I do (overhead kettlebell
presses), the more I press, the better it goes in terms of both progress
lifting and the health of my joints, so I press every day.

You might not need to lower the weight a great deal, just redistribute
your current weekly volume. Since you say it's often the last rep that
causes you trouble, try shortening your sets by a rep or two and doing
more of them, possibly on shorter rest periods, e.g., if you're now
    doing 5 reps by 10 sets 2x/week, that's 100 reps per week. 4 reps by 5
sets, 5x/week gives you the same volume, ditto 5 sets of triples or 3
sets of 5 done every day.

If you've been dislocating ribs you're not going to wait a day to feel
it. You may have tweaked some joints, but you have not dislocated your
ribs. You'd be at the ER asking for some pain killers to help you breath
if you had. Which rib joints did you hurt?

I missed the history on this, and was surprised reading that you had
    this problem in mn.general.

So do you have scoliosis? One curve or two?

There are some freaky hippie type treatments I've been working with
lately for my son, that might come in handy.

Also, when my son was examined, the surgeon asked to see my back and
discovered I've got a minor curve. Now I'm aware of it with things
    like Benches and rows.

I had scoliosis as a teenager. 2 curves. Not severe but it was causing
    some nerve impingements (sp?).

A chiropractor fixed it with 2 years of manipulative therapy. My spine
is still straight 27 years later. :-)

I'm a big believer in chiropractic therapy.

This surgical cure where they cut your back open, stick a rigid rod up
your spine and bolt it to it is for the birds! <shiver>

Well, my chiro says they are "out" and they feel like they are out

Two. The ribs that pop out are right at the apex of the top curve.
BTW, the curve is fairly slight.

Well, my chiro says they are "out" and they feel like they are out

Sounds like a typical chiro: make it up as they go along. You did not
dislocate anything, I think he may have just been using terms he's used
to using, such as 'out', like in 'out of alignment', a catch phrase for
chiros. That isn't to say that the manipulative therapy isn't a good
thing and obviously it's very helpful to you. It just isn't in synch
with his explanation. Chiros would have more credibility if they
actually stuck to the facts instead of their usual cultlike ramblings. A
chiro that does this is a rare thing. I've met one, and he was immensely
helpful (despite repeating one bit of chiro [censored] passed along through
the generations about leg length discrepencies...which we all have and
which we're supposed to have). A more typical experience is when a chiro
makes up a story to explain what he's doing that sounds about right, but
isn't. What's worse is when they go completely off the deep end, like
the chiro who tried to claim to me that he could treat ADHD in kids by
manipulating their skull bones (bones which are fused together, and
moving of which would result in cranial fractures...).

    Quoted message said:

Well, they're the same ribs in the front and back (they wrap around,
hence the term rib cage: like bars in a cage). I was wondering if the
joints were the rib-vertebral body joints or the rib-transverse process
joints. I've had problems with those areas, too, and I can attest to the
help that manipulative therapies of different sorts provide in relief of
pain and help in healing (as well as breathing, moving, etc). Rib joint
pain isn't fun :-( But as I said above, if you were to have pulled the
ribs free from their joints, you would be in a world of hurt immediately.

which we're supposed to have).

I've definitely had them dislocated. Before Masters Nationals, I had
a rib overlap another one and a disk out of place. Just the 45 pound
bar on my back hurt like hell. He put them back into place which
allowed me to compete that weekend. The pain before they were put
back as well as the procedure to put them back was about the most pain
    I've ever felt.

The ribs in question are back
ribs on the left side about in the middle of the rib cage.

I don't doubt that they are just out of alignment because the pain I
feel isn't nearly as bad as it has been on occasion but it is still
painful. But, the fact of the matter is it has continued to pop out
of place and when I go real heavy in the squat, they get "dislocated"
    which is extremely painful.

So, it seems that benching knocks them out of alignment and heavy
squatting dislocates them. I have to come up with a plan to keep them
    from popping out.

How about your first trip up "hershey highway" John? That's gotta

To some degree, anymore than a tiny bit and you have major troubles.
BTW dumbazz, kids cranial bones are NOT fused, and easily manipulated.
