Bean Long said:From the volume of recent postings on the topics of cyclist safety and road
issues, it seems to me there is a revolution coming. In the main, this
revolution is beginning to bite in Vic where I know that there is a lot of
bicycle support. Bike Vic, for example, I once read is THE largest club in
the country (??). It seems like a grass roots push to give cyclists a go
and get more people on bikes. You might think this sounds a bit odd as
much of the debate has arisen from a media swipe at cyclists, but the
backlash is huge (on this group at least), hence the sense of revolution. I
want to know what groups like Bike Vic are doing to take advantage of the
recent publicity over cycling... is there a decisive push going on at the
battle front???
What you're seeing is partially reactions from a few non-related random
incidents in reasonably quick succession, and partially the logical
consequences of more and more people using the same infrastructure for
different purposes with different equipment. Everyone's carrying on
about road rage etc as if it was somehow a new phenomenon. It's not.
The only thing that's changed is that there's now more people using our
roads, so there's more ragey incidents. This is simply because of more
people, thus, more incidents.
Then, add in mobile phone use (the 2000's equivalent of the 1970's
drink drivers) and we're back where we were in the '70s, but there's
more cars, more bikes, more dogs, more lights ....
Maybe there's close to a real critical mass(*) issue on some of our
roads? Beach Rd on a sunny Saturday could be just about there, maybe?
10,000
riders is a lot, if that's a real number and not a guestimate.
(*) I don't mean the Friday night anarchists collective on wheels.
