For normal uni'ing I wear: rockgardn shin guards, pro-tek elbow pads (I
think that is what brand they are - skateboarding pads), wrist
protectors, bike gloves, bike helmet. That's for 28" uni or 24" when
on road. Indoor or out, I always wear protection. At 42 years old, it
just hurts Too Much to fall. I almost _never_ fall, but when I do it
can hurt. My last UPD was catching my pant leg on my cranks -- just
like someone reached out and grabbed my ankle, and I went down hard.
I will not get on the unis without the wrist guards. Period. Not at
all.
But I've been back into mountain biking and for that I wear: full face
Bellistic helmet, rockgardn flak jacket, rockgardn elbow/arm pads,
rockgardn knee/shin pads, hiking boots, rockgardn carbon fiber gloves.
I also have padded shorts, but they are a bit too small so I don't wear
them anymore. Yes, it is very hot. But before getting all this stuff
I took a major digger over the bars and as I was lying on the rocky
ground, I was 100% sure I had really messed up my face. Impact 1"
lower and I would have lost my teeth, 1" higher and broken nose.
The full getup is what I will be wearing in a couple of weeks out in
the woods, trying some rocky downhill with my 24" uni.
And yes the stuff does stink after a while!!! Just toss the lot (except
the helmets) into the wash, gentle cycle, and then a short dryer run,
then hang to try completely.
