  1. I was riding home on Friday after work. It was cold and lightly raining. To go from Factoria to
Eastgate, I chose the south frontage road that runs along the freeway, heading east. This route is a
long, steady slog. I was steadily grinding up the hill, my mind churning on various topics, when I
looked up and saw the moon.

The sun had already set, but there was still light in the sky, such that the sky was a light blue
grey around the moon, not yet black. Dark grey clouds were swirling around, obscuring and revealing
the bright grey-white of the moon. And then seven black birds flew by, in front of the moon, in a
ragged formation. I put my head back down, continuing my pedaling, and looked up again, and there
were three black birds flying in front of the moon. I returned to pedaling, and then put my head
back up, and now there were several dozen birds flying west, towards the brighter horizon behind me.

  2. I have often found birds to be a sign of good fortune, and the waxing moon similarly. It seems to me
that you are seeing a favorable future.

The crow is my personal totem, and I am often accompanied by them on rides. I can tell how the day
is going to go by the direction they fly.

I saw a roadkill raccoon today. He was so perfectly intact, his pelt was still good for trade. He
must've crawled to the traffic island to slowly expire, with no palliative care. And his eyes were
so wide and clear and peaceful. It kinda busted my heart. There was so much dignity in the demise of
    this popularly poorly-regarded creature.

There were no crows pecking at him. At least, when I saw him.

He's tipped-over his last garbage can. I hope he wasn't a cat killer. But if he was, he sure
    isn't now.

    R.I.P., unknown raccoon.

Less than a week before my wedding, a large owl dove in front of my car. I had no chance to avoid
it, and ended up taking the poor thing in the grille, killing it. And oh yeah, my wife's cat died
only a few days before that (she was so stressed out before the wedding that she failed to notice,
and her mother and I declined to let her know until she returned from the honeymoon).

Three years later, I'm not much for omens.

I don't believe in "signs of good fortune" except as form of meditation bell, but I am always
pleased to see a gold finch on a ride, which happens from time to time in the summer.

I'm prepared to take anything I can get as a sign of good fortune, birds are as good as any other
sign. I figure if I'm running out of gas a little wind won't hurt.

Birds are a symbol of the other world or spirit world (native mythology). When you die, your
spirit is escorted to the next world by birds. As for the waxing moon, I am not sure what it's
    supposed to mean.

The only time I know of that birds are not supposed to be good luck: if you are at sea, and you see
three seagulls flying together. That means death. (also, if you see a shark following your vessel).
However, sea birds are generally good luck. But don't shoot an albatross!

I'm with you on the birds. The moon part relates to the fullness of time, as I see it.

Or seeing canada geese flying overhead on their way home in the spring, or on their way out
    in the fall.

A couple of months ago, it was at night, and I could hear a bunch of them flying and honking
overhead, but it was dark. I could hear them but not see them. It was really cool, but sad, we won't
see them again for a long time. Then, one day in april we'll all look up and hear... honk honk honk!
ANd we'll know it's time to get out on the bikes!

Just do as the .sig says, and you'll have no problem. I'm sorry to have to turn to munging -- I've

=v= Yeah, thanks to Earthlink, for not figuring out how to detect and filter this stuff, like pretty
much every other ISP on the planet. :^( <_Jym_

I'd like to but it's not exactly easy with snow and ice on the ground- maybe a thaw would induce me
to go. But that's why god invented trainers!

I generally don't ride much during the wee hours, unless its something like sneaking out of the
girlfriend's place while she's asleep. Anyhow, I took the bike out for a test run early this
morning, in the dark. The local meteorologists said the temp was somewhere around 3 or 4c, but since
I live at a higher altitude part of town, I can usually subract a couple of degrees from the
official temperature. No ice or snow, but I could feel/hear the heavy dew falling out of the sky,
almost like rain. It sure gave me a discomfiting sense of the streets being more slick than if it
actually had been raining. The dew on the streets looked too much like black ice (my nemesis).

So, I try to ride my bike to work during the winter, on every day that there is no snow in the
forcast. You could do the same!

We always seem to get our first "surprise" snowfall of the year during a Friday afternoon rush hour.
