The last floor pump?

Hmm....that sounds like what I'm after, but I can't find one with the gauge
up near the top.

Is a Silca and a $5 pair of CVS eyeglasses hanging next to the pump,
just for viewing the guage when pumping out of the question?
My dad, not wanting to have to carry glasses, has taken to leaving a
set of those in the few places he may need them (i.e. one in the shop,
one on the table next to the couch where he reads the paper, one in
the trucks glovebox).

Yeah, I think that's out of the question. Performance advertises these
pro-quality pumps. Perhaps one of them will do. I can return it if I find
it ratty.

I'm moderately nearsighted, so can't read the dial without my specs,
however, my cheap ass Joe Blow has a rotating bezel with an arrow. You
just rotate it to the pressure you need, and unless you're wearing
coke bottle glasses, it's pretty easy to see when the needle lines up
with the arrow. Sans bezel, use some nail polish to make a few marks
for your particular stable of tire.

Mine has that and I do use it. However, when switching bikes, I still have
to adjust it and it's still not that easy to see in the dark garage. Since

I have one of the Performance pumps (can't remember the model) it cost
~$25-30 and has worked perfectly for the past 3 years. It replaced one
that worked perfectly for ~12 years. At ~$2/year they are pretty good
value.

Yes, I think that's good value. I bought the one I have now in 2003. The
little tab has come off before, but I always managed to find it and replace
it. Well, the last time it popped off it got lost. So, pumping with it is
less than not fun. I guess I could put some tape on that side.

I've had a Silca for almost 30 years now. I've gone through about a
dozen gaskets at ~$1 a pop, one leather piston washer (about $3, IIRC)
and a new piece of hose (~$0.75). Last year I picked up a UBS Silca
repair kit on eBay for about $20 with several brass heads, a dozen gaskets,
another dozen leather washers, and a number of other parts. Ought to
last the rest of my life, I figure.

I gave up looking for a "forever" floor pump, and am one of those weirdos
who doesn't particularly like the Silcas (I've replaced a whole lot of Silca
gauges over the years, and prefer a high-quality thumb lock head to the
Silca push-on style). I use the cheapie Wrench Force (Trek) Air Slim. Costs
about $30, and I get two years use out of 'em before they're toast. And
that's a *lot* of use, not just once a month, and includes leaving the poor
thing outdoors in the rain. Would probably last a whole lot longer if I took
better care of it. The gauge is also very easy to read (though not at the
top).

Well, I've had my Wrench Force for 3+ years now, so I guess I'm doing ok
with it! 🙂

I think part of the reason I find tie gauge difficult is because I'm always
pumping up in my garage. I was out there last night getting the bike ready
for this mornings ride, and I had to pick it up to adjust the arrow on the
gauge. It had slide from it's normal position.
