Hi Dave. I can only get them from the big city, they're not the sort of thing you find in the local shops. Calling myself a fan of them is stretching things a bit, but they seem to do the job. I bought some High5 a few days ago and discovered its main ingredient is maltodextren. So instead of paying $26 dollars a tin I can get maltodextren for $6 a kilo and I'll make my own. Maltodextren is a common ingredient for brewing beer. You can get it in supermarkets.
I used to make a mix of maltodextren and coke to get me through the Avon Descent canoe race. If you leave it in the camel back for two days it ferments and makes a lovely gassy drink.

Most of the others I've tried have been too thick, but I can get a Carbo Shotz gel down without a problem with just a mouthful of water afterwards. The other thing I like about them is I can mix them up with a bit of water and have one bidon for powerade and one for gel/water mix.
WARNING: RUNNING COMMENT IMMINENT I also tried these when i did a half-marathon last year, one every 40 mins, and found at the end I had energy to burn. So I've been sold on them ever since

Jetta called and changed the bike pickup time, for the fourth time! It's okay because they pushed it back an hour (11am-1pm now).
Bike still isn't boxed. I put two bottle cages on it. The Kryptonite U-Lock mount wont fit on the frame with two cages so the lock will have to be strapped to the rack I guess. I'm looking up the speedo manual so I can set it up for the StreetRazor slicks.

Those bloody time zones. I once rang my brother from UK reverse charges. I stuffed up the time zones and accidentally rang him at 5am (he worked in a pub so had only been asleep a couple of hours) so he was pretty sleepy when he accepted the call. We were talking for about 30 mins when he said this must be costing me a fortune. I said what are you talking about, this is reverse charges, you're paying. "What!!" ... CLICK!

Where are you going to be around late July/Early August? Any itineraryish plans? I'll be in Venice from about 12 July, Florence (as a base... cycling around Tuscany... mmmm Chianti) till about 25th July then heading up to Austria way to pick up the Rhine through Germany to the Essen area (family there and places on the way). Riding around the Koln/Dusseldorf/Essen area until I head back here about mid-September. If you're going to be around that area give me a call on the tosserphone (email off-list for the number). Maybe we can share a German ale or several!

I wanted to head up to Germany.. have a friend in Heidelberg.. No idea when though.. depends how quick/slow I am and how many times I get lost (my bet is on lots!!).
